Womens Ice Hockey
Season Preview

The Red Raider's enter thier final season at Division 3 having finished  2nd in the ECAC last year in the regular season and in the playoffs.  Thier only 2 ECAC losses came to Middlebury, which has not lost a division 3 game in about 5 years.   Colgate should be a better team though this year, and it should be another very exciting season.  Colgate's top scorer from last season, All-American Heather Murphy is returning, but the players who were number 2 and 3 in total points have both graduated, as wel as one of the teams top defensemen.   Charlotte Davet was the captain last year, and one of the best leaders you could ask for.  She will be hard to replace,  Colgate brought in 7 freshman, most of them forwards to help with this years's season.  We are also bringing back a lot of upperclassmen who have already earned thier spot on the team.  Let's start with the blue liners.  Heather Smith and Kelly Roos are both juniors, they might have been the two top defensemen last year, and Colgate's defense was the key to thier success.  Opponents just were not allowed to get good shots off all season.  Toby Mandel, Rachel Mascetta, and Missy Parkinson all were introduced to Red Raider action last year, they return for thier sophomore seasons.  With the start they got off to, they should have good careers with Colgate over the next few years.   Of course, Colgate's offense was also in great form last year.  We did a good job cycling the puck, and finding a good shot.  Heather Murphy scored 26 goals and made 26 assists.  She possesses it all, speed, stick handling, she can blast a surprisingly powerful slapshot from the high slot, or make a nice finish from the front of the net.  And when she draws 2 or more players from the other team to her coming down the ice or in the corner, she can set up a nice pass to one of her open teammates.  She's simply one of the best players Division 3 has to offer.   The senior class consists of Lauren Pufahl, last season she netted 9 goals and 6 assists.  She's going to be a major force on the ice this year.   The juniors are heavily represented at foward.  After a solid season last year, look for even more improvement.   The sophomores greatly added to the teams depth last year, many of them seeing significant playing time as freshman.  Nicole Lehroff led that class with 8 points on the season.   In goal this year will once again be Jen Burtraw. Last year she joined the team and quickly became the programs number 1 goalie. Her size and reflexes made her a very tough target to beat. She thinks the game very well, and maintains focus and good positioning throughout the game. It is very rare to see her ever let up a soft goal. Since she does have a very good defense playing in front of her, she doesn't face as many of the really great shots that she does not have as high percentages on. It was her save percentage against those great shots that cost her a spot on the all ECAC team. She still set a record for shutouts in a season with 9. This years freshman look just as promising.   Coach Wisner also recieved awards for being one of the top coaches in the nation, and he's still a new guy here!  The team is still very young, despite it's accomplishments, look for a great season as they prepare to move up to Division 1 at the end of the season.  There is still some unfinished business at the division 3 level though.  There are 19 teams in the league.  Colgate will crush several of them, but several of them will be tough games, that could still go either way.   Middlebury of course will be the big challenge, they had two big wins over Colgate last year, and many people think we are the only team who will be able to stop them from reaching 100 wins in a row.  3 of thier top 6 goal scored graduated, as well as thier top goalie and three of the seniors last year were defensemen.   They will be reloading just as fast though.  Middlebur was picked to finish first in the league.  Colgate was about 50 points behind them, but with 1 first place vote.   Williams and Vermont are both about 30 points behind us.  Colgate womens hockey is fast becoming a tradition at Colgate.   The times of home games are posted next to the game, and every seat is free.   So do yourself a favor and stop over at a game or two this season, and remember, we're playing Middlebury at home on December 2nd!

November 11th - At Wayne State

Results
-Colgate faced a tough opponent from the lower ranks of division 1 in their opener. The Gate's was able to hold off Wayne state for almost 1 period, before giving up the first goal. Heather Murphy scored 1 for Colgate in the second, but Wayne State was able to roll on to a 3-1 win in the end.

Novemeber 12th - At Wayne State
Results
-This was another tough game. The first period was scoreless, and the second began that way until Heather Murphy found Katie Koch on a power play and put Colgate ahead. Wayne State evened the score with just 9 seconds left in the period. The third was even more exciting, with both teams battling back and forth until freshman Caitlin Hornyak scored with just over 2 minutes left to play. Two minutes later, Lauren Pufalh netted the insurance goal, and Colgate went on to split the series, with a hard fought 3-1 win.

Novemeber 18th - Wesleyan  7:30 pm
Game Preview and pre game
-Wesleyan was 4-10-3 in the league last season, and preseason polls place them at the number 14 slot this year. Colgate won last years game 3-0.
Results
     - Colgate started with early pressure, but it was Wesleyan who surprised everyone with the first goal. The oppositions strenght was it's goal tending, their net minder was pelted with 35 shots on the night, and the play was in thier zone most of the time. Colgate proved to be much faster, and had very good passing all night long. Most of the game looked like a Colgate power play. Then the goals began to pile up for Colgate again. 3 of Colgate's 5 goals were scored by freshman, always a good sign. Rachel Mascetta assisted on 3 goals as well. Colgate split it's goaltending duties down the middle. Jen Burtraw gets the win after allowing 1 goal and making 6 saves. The junior transfer student, Kari Dequine, stopped all 4 shots on net in the second half of the game. Colgate wins 5-1.

Novemeber 19th - Connecticut   3 pm
Game Preview and pre game
     - It's the 3rd season for the Conn. College Camels. They placed 16th in the ECAC preseason poll, that should tell you what to expect in todays game. They went 3-12- 2 last year in the ECAC, including a 3-0 loss to Colgate. Thier top goal scorer has graduated, but they are returning the core of thier team.

Novemeber 25th - St Mary's (Minnesota)    4 pm
Game Preview
-St Mary's was 16-6-3 last year, but they only lost one player, and their head coach. They compete in the MIAC.
Pre game
-St Mary's is 3-2 heading into the first game, most of their game have been 1 sided so far.
Results
     - Colgate scored the first 3 goals in the first 25 minutes of play. Murphy, Lehroff and Breen lit the lamp for the Red Raiders. St. Mary's scored the next two, to pull within 1, but thats as close as thier comeback would come. Colgate wins 3-2.

November 26th - St Mary's (Minnesota)     2 pm
Results
     - Can you guess which ECAC division 3 team obviously didn't spend time working on special teams? Colgate allowed 4 power play goals, and 2 shorthanded goals. Colgate did not play bad, but they seemed to have trouble against a team of equal strenght, even though Colgate was ranked above them. The second period was the killer, the Cardinals scored 3 times on just 5 shots. Colgate did outshoot St. Mary's by quite a bit, and 2 of our 3 goals were scored by freshman. They just need to develope a little bit on moving the puck around and setting up the best shots. Specials teams needs some work too I guess, all of St. Mary's goals were on special teams as Colgate faces a 6-3 setback.

November 28th - Syracuse Stars    7  pm
Game preview and pre game
     - The Stars are a HS team, but a very good one, state championship quality. And the only reason I say that, is because they won it the past two years. They have already tuned on our leagues Manhattanville and RIT, both games were blow outs in favor of the Stars. So this will be a tough game, but a chance to hopefully win over some recruits.
Results
     - Well, at least it was an exhibition. Colgate only dressed 16 players and Kari Dequine started in net due to an injur to Jen Burtraw. Heather Murohy scored the lone goal for Colgate, who lost 8-1.

December 2nd - Middlebury    2 pm
Game Preview
-This is the game of the year, the game of the players careers to date. Middlebury is the dominant team in Division 3, they have been for the past 5 years, where they have compliked a unbeaten streak that is fast aproaching 100 wins in a row. This is the last chance to stop them before they reach that mark. Colgate lost twice to them last year, in the regular season, and the league finals, both those games at Middlebury.
Pregame
-Middlebury never seems to lose a step with each graduating class. The freshman are once again, very good. They won thier first two league games by a combined margin of 10-0. Colgate's best hope is that we are at home, ona smaller rink, that we use to our advantage, like Middlebury uses thier large rink. The Stars will be a very important lead in game to this. If you go to one womens hockey game this year, this is the one. Middlebury has one last hurdle to clear before reaching 100 and 0, and that hurdle is maroon. Jen Burtraw is now unlikely to play, due to a concussion.
Results
-The crowd was there, the team was ready, Middlebury was hungry for a challenge, its time for a possible preview of the ECAC title game! Both teams put on pressure early on, but it was Middlebury who broke the goal line first. Colgate stayed with them though, and for the first time in a long while, Middlebury found themselves pinned in thier own zone by an ECAC opponent. They were forced to ice the puck on numerous occasions, but thier centers were able to clean up the mess on the ensuing face off. Middlebury had the better passing game, which showed itself on numerous occassions. The second Middlebury goal was a demonstration of poor sportsmanship, and a blind ref. Jen Burtraw dropped her stick, and as she reached down to grab it, it was kicked purposly out of her reach, a few seconds later, Middlebury scored. Colgate pulled within 1 when Hornyak connected on a feed from Murphy to find the back of the net. Middlebury put the game away with a powerplay goal halfway through the third. Colgate would score once more with the goalie pulled, but that was teh end of the comeback. Colgate gives Middlebury a run for their money, but comes up just short with a 3-2 loss.

December 5th - At Hamilton College
Game Preview
-This is a non conference matchup. Colgate won both games last year, 7-1 and 2-0. Hamilton has a new head coach. Last year they finished 11th in the league, but they only lost 1 letterwinner. Preseason polls place them at the number 12 slot.
Pre game
-Hamilton is on a 4 game winning streak, winning all thier games this season. They beat the number 13 and 17 teams by fairly slim margins. They have been very good defensivly though going into thier first big test of the season. They have allowed just 5 goals in 4 games. Paula Dady is the scorer to look out for.
Results
     - Hamilton stayed strong on defense, but was not mounting much offense. At least as far as shots are concerned, Colgate finally broke through in the second at the end of the period scoring 3 in the final 6 minutes. Hornyak, Roos, and Koch were the goal scoreres. Breen added a 4th at the near the end of the third. Colgate must have been watching the clock at the end, Hamilton scored twice in the final minute and a half to make the score a little closer, but Colgate takes the win, 4-2.

December 9th - At Union
Game Preview
     - We beat Union 7-0 at Starr rink last year. Union went on to finish 14th in the league, they were placed at 15th in the preseason poll.
Pre game
     - Union has only scored 1 league goal so far this year, and that was against Middlebury! Thier defense has been doing ok, their new goalie is pretty good, but they are not getting very much offensive pressure.
Results
-Kari Dequine was in net tonight, she faced 14 shots, stopped em all. Heather Murphy recored a hat trick, scoring 3 of the first 4 goals. She added 2 assists, to get a point in 6 of the teams 7 goals. Hornyak scored twice, assisted once, and Katie Koch assisted on 3 goals. The team gets some time off for finals and Christmas. They have one more non league game, then will work through the rest of the ECAC schedule before heading to the playoffs. Union is once again downed 7-0.

December 30th - Niagara
Game Preview
     - The Purple Eagles took an easy 10-1 win over Colgate last year. They went on to finish 8th in the ECAC Division 1 womens league. They lost just three players, and are returning their top goalie. This will be a challenge for Colgate, but one we need to step up for, as we join them next year.
Pre game
-Niagara is 7-8-1 going into this game. Earlier this season, the beat common opponent Wayne State 4-0 and 3-0. They are averaging 2.7 goals a game, and only 2.1 goals against. Expect a slow fisrt period, as both teams feel each other out. Niagara gets more agressive as the game goes on, but they also leave themselves weaker on defense, they have been known to take a few too many penalties. They are going to come at us with a very balanced attack, so our depth will be tested. It's going to be a tough game, and one I hope we play competitivly in.
Results
-Well, we did better than last year. We held them for a bit, then we didn't, then we let in some more later. The final was 6-0 Niagara. This is about what you'd expect, but I was hoping for a Colgate goal or two. We have one more class of recruits to come in before we have to compete with these guys. But next year might not be too much fun.

January 6th - At Trinity
Game Preview
-Colgate lit up Trinity last year, 11-1. The Bantams wound up in 16th place last year in the ECAC, and has been predicted to stay right about there. This will be thier third varsity season. They are hoping this will be the best yet, despite losing all three of their captains from last year.
Pre game
-Well, they are 0-4-1 heading into this game. They are doing ok in goal, but thier netminder is just facing a hail of pucks. They only have 4 goals in 5 games, that doesn't help much. Let's hope Colgate just sticks to working on its plays and doesn't try to see if the scoreboard in the rink can hit triple digits.
Results
     - Zap, pow, and bang bang bang. Colgate fired off 63 shots, compared to Trinities 8. Heather Murphy opened up the scoring about a minute in, and would go on to score a hat trick, in the first period. Sufficed to say, it was all Colgate, we scored our 8th goal about 4 minutes into the 3rd. Then Trinity changed goalies, while Colgate called a time out, my guess is Coach Wiser told them to knock it off with the scoring, since they didn't score again after that. And we took a 8-0 win to get back on track.

January 7th - At Amherst
Game Preview
-Last years game was a battle, with Colgate winning 3-2. They also lost just two letterwinners. But more players than that will not be around for the whole season. In short, they are expecting a lot out of the freshman class, they finished 12th last year in the league, and have been predicted to drop a spot with the addition on Manhattanville to the lineup. To be honest, I'm not excepting too much from them this year, they showed some signs of being good last year, but they were inconsistant. With the roster shifts, that will be even harder to come by this year.
Pre game
     - Heading into this weekend, Amhearst is scoring a little under 2 goals a game, while allowing 5. They have yet to win, losing thier first 5. But they have had about a month off to prepare for the second half of the season.
Results
     - Colgate scored twice in the first 10 minutes to seemingly take off. But we hit a major speedbump, as we would give up two powerplay goals in the next 5 minutes to even the score. Then we scored the next 6 goals to put an end to that silliness. Heather Murphy completed a second hat trick on the weekend. Amherst just was not able to click with thier roster changes. Jen Burtraw stopped 16 of the 18 shots she faced, as Colgate won 8-2.

January 13th - Vermont    2 pm
Game Preview
    - These two teams met 3 times last year, with Colgate winning all three, but twice by a 1 goal margin. Vermont went on to finish in a tie for third in the ECAC. The preseaon poll placed then at 4th. This is also thier third varsity season. There will be no secret to thier success this year, defense. They are returning all of thier top blue liners, as well as the goalie who took ECAC rookie goalie of the year. They have a tough schedule this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see Division 1 in thier future a few years down the road.
Pre game
    - Vermont swept this past weekend after losing the 4 previous games. Thier last 7 games, and all but 2 of the games this season, have been decided by shutout. They are first in the league in goals against average, and 4th in scoring offense, while Colgate is ranked 1st in offense and tied for third in defense. This should be a good matchup, with Vermont being in the national top ten poll for the past few weeks. They also have one of the leagues best goalies, if not the best.
Results
    - Colgate doubled the shot output of Vermont, but could not get anything past thier goalie. Absolutly nothing. Vermont scored in the first and second. And that was enough to shut out Colgate on thier home ice. It's a very dissapointing loss. But hopefully it will serve as a wake up call.

January 14th - Rensselaer    2 pm
Game Preview
    - A pesky Engineer squad was downed last year at Starr rink, RPI rallied to bring the game to within one, as they lost 4-3. They tied for third in the league, lost 5 players, and have been predicted to drop to 7th. Losing thier top two scorers has to hurt. RPI has always been a top 5 team, I'd be surprised if that trend didn't continue.
Pre game
-RPI is 3-4 in the league prior to this weekend. They have lost 3 in a row to Vermont, Bowdoin and Colby. They seem to be right in the middle of the league in most catergories. They score 3.1 goals a game, and give up 2.7. Should be a fairly easy win for Colgate.
Results
    - I can't explain this one, maybe everyone is sick... RPI scored 3 goals on 5 shots in the third period to pull ahead of Colgate. Two of those goals being on power plays. Fortunatly, Kock tied things up with 3 minutes left, to bring Colgate to a 4-4 tie. It was her second of the night. RPI opened the scoring just 30 seconds into the contest. Colgate still nearly doubled the shot output, but theres just simply something not good going down, a tie and a loss at home? But, if the team learns a lot after this weekend, it could put them in better shape heading into the ECAC playoffs, I hope.

January 20th - At Williams
Game Preview
    - Pesky, pesky pesky...three words to describe Williams, you cannot over look them. We beat them in a hard fought game at Colgate last year, the 4-1 score did not indicate how close the game was. The 1-0 win we had over them in the playoffs is more like it. They lost 5 letterwinners, but are still considered a league finals contender. They are also a top ten team in the nation. They lost thier top three scorers, but defense was thier key last year. This will be one of the biggest road games.
Pre game
-Williams is currently 9-2-0 and is tied for second in the league. Thier freshman, Molly Wasserman, is the leading points getter in the league right now, a small step above Heather Murphy. They have allowed exactly 1 goal a game, and they match up much better than us on special teams. Colgate is going to need to break out of this mini slump very quickly and get a convincing win here. Williams is ranked 8th in Division 3, while Colgate has fallen to the number 5 spot.
Results
    - Colgate piled on 15 shots in the first period, but it was Williams who scored the first goal, with just under a minute remaining. Williams pushed hard in the second, and extended thier lead to 2-0 after a power play goal 5 minutes in. Colgate fought hard in the 3rd, outshooting Williams 17-8, but they only scored twice, both by Heather Murphy, and once on a powerplay. Williams also scored once, to put them ahead for good, as the Red Raiders lose another one, 3-2.

January 21st - At Holy Cross
Game Preview
-Holy Cross is making the move to Varisty this year, after going 13-17 at the club level last year, despite a losing record at club last year, they have still been selected to be better than MIT, but not by much. With this being thier first year, you can expect a lot from the freshman class, who will be thier first recruits. It's going to be a rough year, but one they need to get through.
Pre game
-Holy Cross has been shut out 7 times this year. Thier 1 league win and tie puts them in 14th place in the league. They have allowed over 5 goals a game, while averaging less than 2 scored. Those numbers include a 15-0 win at M.I.T. Expect a big win here today, this is our lock of the week.
Results
-Maura Crowell opened up the scoring for Colgate, and scored a goal in each period for her first career hat trick. The second period was the busy period, when Colgate outscored Holy Cross 4-2. The goals against the Red Raiders broke back up goalie Kari Dequine's shutout streak, which was 365 minutes long. Everyone was finding the net tonight, as Colgate gets back on the winning track, with a 7-2 win.

January 27th - At Manhattanville
Game Preview
    - The Valiants join our ECAC party, after being an independant last year. In fact, it was thier first season, with all freshman, and they took the game pretty seriously and went 15-8. They have been picked to finish 7th in the ECAC this year, but got 1 first place vote. They have three former Syracuse Stars on thier team, and many other good recruits. Manhattanville is heading in one direction, straight up. They will be competing for the league title very soon.
Pre game
    - Colgate is just 9 points ahead of Manhattanville in the USCHO poll, The Red Raiders have falled to a tie for 7th, while the Valiants are in 9th. The opposition has won 3 straight, and holds wins over Williams, and has a loss to Middlebury, both close games. They have the number 1 offense in the league, and 5.6 goals per game, while allowing just 1.2, Colgate has a slight special teams advantage. And I would have to give Manhattanville the goaltending advantage. This should be a close game, and it's going to come down to a lot of individual factors. It's going to come downt o the final few minutes.
Results
-The Red Raiders had a strong first. Roos got the first Colgate goal, then 3 minutes later, we gave up a powerplay goal. Middlebury scored the next two, to give them a 1 goal lead, which Colgate finally erased with a minute and a half left, thats to Hornyaks goal. M dominated the OT, but Colgate pulled out a hard fought 3-3 tie on the road.

January 28th - At Sacred Heart
Game Preview
    - The Pioneers could not break the goal line in two tries against the Red Raider's last year. They placed 7th in the league last year, and have been picked to drop to tenth. They are losing 5 letterwinners, including the top two scorers. Look for agressive defense, and solid goaltending. I think they will be better than predicted.
Pre game
    - Looking at the common opponents, we have the advantage. Sacred Heart has been playing pretty good hockey though. Scoring over 4 goals a game, and letting in less than 2 on average. Special teams has hurt them, as they give up a lot of powerplays, and have not been great on the penalty kill. It's the second day of a road trip though, witha tough opponent on night 1, so we can't overlook them, but if we play well, we can win.

February 3rd - Colby   2 pm
Game Preview
    -
Pre game
-Colby is ranked very simmilarly to Colgate right now
results
-We controled the tempo of the game in the parts that I saw. Heather Murphy has been moved back to defense. This keeps her on the ice a bit longer, and shes still valuble. 2 minutes into the game, we got a lucky break, as the puck went off a players back and into the net! Colgate continued to pressure, but failed to score again until 5 minutes left in the second, when McGlenn beat the goalie. Colgate outshot Colby 35-8, so Murphy on defense paid off. A 2-0 win was a nice way to get back on track!

February 4th - Bowdoin      2 pm
Game Preview
    -
Pre game
    - Bowdoin tied Middlebury a few games ago, to mark the first D3 game Middlebury did not win in 5 years. They are 6th in the nation going into the game.
Results
    - The Red Raiders defense held Bowdoin to the outside, but the opposition had a good goalie, and our shots seemed somewhat weak. We had offensive pressure, but we were not getting that great pass, or much lift on our shots. Heather Murphy did pack a punch from the point. She got flagged for a non existant penalty later in the second, and got sent to the box, Bowdoin scored on the powerplay, to take a 1-0 lead. Murphy would get revenge early in the second with a nice shot. 1 minute later, Roos converted on a turnover to put the puck into the back of the net. The Bowdoin goalie was rattled, I could see it from where I was sitting, the teams confidence was gone. Hornyak and Lehroff would also light the lamp before it came to an end. Bowdoin did take advantage of an out of place Jen Burtraw, but 4-2 would be the final score, as the Raiders close out a great weekend.

February 9th - Hamilton       7 pm
Game Preview
    -
Pre game
    - Hamilton has lost a lot of close games this year. They can't be overlooked, but they are the easier team of the weekend, we already beat them once non conference. It's a special 7 pm starting time at Starr rink, so come on out to the game!
