What is the Miniconcurso?

The Miniconcurso is a foreign language competition held in Miami-Dade County, by the Foreign Language Teachers of Dade County. Spanish Honor Society members compete in Spanish in one of the following categories (two, if they choose to be in the play):

1.Impromptu Speech - Discurso Espontaneo

Description: You will pull three topics out of a hat. You have 30 seconds to prepare. You must speak on the topic for 2 FULL MINUTES. Use good vocabulary, well-structured speech, and no hesitations or long pauses. Possible topics include the following:

Spanish 5 Advanced (note that most Impromptu contestants are in Advanced Speakers): --Si fuera presidente de los Estados Unidos... ---La ciencia y la tecnologia moderna ---Las ventajas de ser bilingue ---Descripcion de un aspecto historico de mi tierra natal ---Lo que significa la democracia para mi ---Debe respetarse el derecho del individuo a ser diferente? ---Los aspectos importantes de mi pais de origen, ---La supersticion ---La mejor forma de gobierno ---Los valores y atributos del pasado  que me gustaria que existieran hoy. ---La libertad, derecho o privilegio ---Los avances tecnologicos de nuestra era.

2. Poetry - Declamacion

Description: Recite a poem, paying attention to rhythm, articulation, volume, facial expression. You can view the list of poems with Mrs. Merly

3. Drama - Obra Dramatica

Description: A play performed at 15 minutes max. Judging based on costume and props, memorization and good delivery of lines. Students who participate in the play must also participate in Speech or Poetry.

4. Project - Proyecto

Description: A poster, sculpture or model of an aspect of Hispanic culture. Theme changes year to year. The student who prepares the work must also write a short essay about its relevance and be ready to answer questions on the day of the competition. Students who prepare the project may not participate in any other category.

State Competition

Go to www.thefssc.org for more information than below. There is also a four-day long state competition held in Orlando in April. It includes the same Categories as the Miniconcurso. However, EVERYONE who goes to state has to do discurso IN ADDITION to their category. The cost of the state competition is roughly $170 per student (hotel room, food, transportation costs). It's only one day or two of work; the rest is play. Coral Reef students have a chance of winning the state competition, but funds for the trip are low.
