About Us

These are all the details we have about these print items, which appear on this page in no particular order. Generally when available, you can order back issues from the publisher for a small fee. You can find back issue ordering instructions on most magazine masthead pages.

These entries do not duplicate story-specific materials we point to on other site—film-specific—pages. However, an online version might be available here without photos included in the print editions, and vice versa.

In Style

This American magazine featured Mr Caviezel in a fashion piece, where he described the importance of choosing classic wear. This article contains at least two colour photos. The issue is from March 2002, and the article is titled “Man of Style”. The piece follows a question and answer format and attributes the questions to Peter McQuaid.

We assume Mr Caviezel answered these questions. Brands mentioned probably owe Mr Caviezel something in exchange for his including them in his responses.

Added May 2, 2002
McQuaid says of Mr Caviezel that he takes more than just his clothes seriously. “It was interesting to discover how his yearning for a sense of connection with God, his past, and his present influence his choices.”

Added May 28, 2002
Apparently the June 2002 German edition of this magazine duplicates the same photos seen in the US edition. We have not seen the German text, so cannot vouch that it is a localized version of the same text that appeared in the English language edition.

GQ

Added March 13, 2004, thanks to MW
We understand there is a GQ&A with Mr Caviezel in the current issue, with Angelia Jolie in a red dress on the cover. It is a one-page series of familiar Qs and As about playing Jesus, with a not-seen-before photo. When we get the edition number and date, we’ll post it.

The September 2002 print issue of this US magazine, commemorating 45 years of publication, features Mr Caviezel as “the coolest rebel” in its table of contents.

In the body of the magazine, his spread leads the list of 45 ‘coolest’. Mr Caviezel is shown playing an updated version of the James Dean character from “Rebel Without a Cause” wearing a white shirt and defending himself with a switchblade knife. The movie scene was shot behind the Griffith Park planetarium in Los Angeles.

The commentary with the photo reads : “As Jim Caviezel (who will star in the upcoming thriller ‘Highwayman’) shows, James Dean’s shirt still looks sharp. Good guys wear white, remember?”

The photo was shot in Los Angeles on June 6, 2002, without noting the locale.

You can also find a page devoted to the ‘hey, nice jacket’ ad published in September 2002 Esquire.

Newspaper Magazines

Many newspapers in America, the British Isles, Australia, and Europe featured Mr Caviezel in ‘Monte Cristo’ openings. This list covers those we’ve seen or have been told about.
  • Orange County Register
Note  clarifying update from BP Apr 8
In the “Show” section for January 25, 2002, you can find a review of “The Count of Monte Cristo” and an interview with Mr Caviezel. A colour photo of Mr Caviezel as Count Monte Cristo graces the large cover (and the bottom of our ‘Monte Cristo’ page), and there are two additional black and white film stills inside.
  • The Sunday Times
In the Culture Magazine for April 14, 2002, you can find an interview Mr Caviezel may have given a year earlier about his work in “The Count of Monte Cristo”. We’re confident he gave the interview, but stating his age as 32 may mean that the interview took place some time ago.

The article is titled ‘Gentleman Jim, The star who likes actresses to keep their clothes on’ and is listed as the cover story.

The stock photo of Mr Caviezel and Ms Dominczky is the magazine’s cover, and stills from “Angel Eyes”, “The Thin Red Line”, and “The Count of Monte Cristo” are shown inside, with a unique photo of Mr Caviezel standing. All photos are colour.

The top center photo tease on the front page of The Sunday Times, displays a miniature of the Culture cover with this text: “Hollywood gentleman, new star Jim Caviezel believes in charm and decency”.

You can find the online version of content only on our ‘Monte Cristo’ page.

  • Brisbane Sunday Mail
    Added April 24, 2002, confirmed May 8, 2002
We understand that Mr Caviezel as ‘Count’ makes the cover of this newspaper insert named Encore, dated April 21, 2002.

The full page cover photo shows Mr Caviezel as the ‘Count’, and reveals the scarab carving on the fantastic ruby and diamond ring he wears.

    Tidbit
Ancient Egyptians used scarab carved gem stones as a talisman and a symbol of the soul.

Helen Barlow’s article describes Mr Caviezel (“Count Charisma” titles the article) and his performance in ‘Red Line’ as compelling, and that his “...dazzling, sincere, blue-eyed glare convinced us he was going places, yet he was not so sure...” She goes on to...dare we say...rave about his storytelling skills in ‘Monte Cristo’ delivered after “...developing a new found confidence to play a romantic, swashbuckling hero...”.

She relays Mr Caviezel’s descriptions of out-of-sequence shooting, and several personal motivations for telling the story the way he chose to tell it.

  • Sunday Express
    Added April 24, 2002
The Pull-out Review section, we believe dated April 21, 2002, with Prince Charles on the cover, contains a two-page interview with Mr Caviezel titled “The Moral Code of a Smouldering Idol”. A black and white close up, size 18 inches x 8 inches is available, together with a stock shot from the ‘Monte Cristo’ film.

Esquire

In the February 2002 American edition of this magazine, in an article titled “However Measured”, Mr Caviezel shares bespoke clothing honours with Elias Koteas.

There are three colour photographs of Mr Caviezel in this article.

Added August 25, 2002
The notable difference between the online ad and the print ad is the use of Mr Caviezel’s first name: Jim in print and James online. Also, the online ad offers more details about both Mr Caviezel and the clothing he wears.

For a time we posted an electronic link to these photos; however as of February 26, 2003, the online versions have disappeared. We recommend you find a print copy. Also, we understand Mr Caviezel also visible in the September 2002 issue wearing the same label.

Vanity Fair

Added September 12, 2002
In the October 2002 edition of this American magazine, you can find a print version of Mr Caviezel’s profile that says, ‘Hey, Nice Turtleneck’.

Film Review

Added May 5, 2002
Magazine contains both an article about Mr Caviezel and a review of ‘Monte Cristo’, which produces this quote:
“...Caviezel, who has carved a niche for sensitive, internalized protagonists, is well suited to Edmond’s mire of misery, but rises far above expectations as the genuinely dashing and charismatic Count...”

Photos are stock film photos, including the familiar photo with Dagmara Dominczyk, which forms the full facing page for the article.

(UK) Arena for Men

Confirmed April 27, 2002
In early April, we understood the May 2002 copy of Arena for Men contained an interview with Mr Caviezel, and some not-seen-before pictures.

The magazine combines Hugh Jackman, Gael Garcia Bernal and Jim Caviezel as “Hollywood’s New Elite”. His article is titled “Jim Caviezel Has a Higher Calling” with this subtitle:

“A 771-year-old saint told Jim Caviezel his career would change if he prayed more. Having just bagged his first headlining role in The Count of Monte Cristo, who are we to say it’s not working?”

The article, which is respectful and objective, brings some new details to light about Mr Caviezel, and describes him this way:

“He has the gravitas of an elderly statesman visiting a war zone. He’s not a man you imagine leaping onto a sofa and spraying his mates with lager when his team wins the league”.

The article contains two full page colour photos, and one full page black and white and a fourth black and white shot with a generous white border. These are new photos we haven’t seen before.

The article quotes Mr Caviezel saying:

“I have a hard time, I worry about the message I give to people. We live in a culture that treats people like objects. I’ve always been a bit counter-cultural. This business is a gift, but you’re going to be put through tests. Its not easy—I’m not called to an easy life....”

Total Film

Added May 11, 2002
The May 2002 issue of this English magazine runs another favourable ‘Monte Cristo’ review—*** out of **** possible, and yet another article “introducing” Mr Caviezel and his work.

In Dennis Hensley’s article, ‘Pop Goes Caviezel’—a five-year-old phrase meant to introduce a proper pronunciation, he writes:

“The olive skin, the sculpted cheekbones, the eyes that seem focused on infinity—the only surprising thing about Jim Caviezel’s turn as a swashbuckling hero in The County of Monte Cristo is that it didn’t happen sooner”.

Mr Caviezel also describes script issues with the ‘Monte Cristo’ shoot not covered elsewhere.

There is one full page colour photo and a second quarter page colour photo, with several ‘Monte Cristo’ photos included.

Heinz

Rumoured May 12, 2002
We understand that the German magazine, Heinz, uses the ‘Monte Cristo’ sword-and-revenge film poster shot, with the sword more angled than used in US posters, as its cover. We don’t know the month, but it’s probably a spring month, 2002.

Nor do we know if the magazine contains more than a review, nor do we know what kind of review the magazine gave to the film.

Marie Claire (Germany)

Added August 15, 2002
In its article titled ‘Jesus Christ’s Superstar’ Marie Claire interviews Mr Caviezel about his work ethic and his beliefs, while taking free editorial license to promote his reputation as a devout Catholic.

We can’t find any new news in this interview, but the photo of Mr Caviezel with his head above water in a pool, fully clothed, once again reveals how much the camera simply adores him.

This is the August 2002 edition of the magazine.

Pre-2002

This is a list of magazines that we’ve found that pre-date 2002, and generally, the press coverage of “The Count of Monte Cristo”.
  • Movieline Magazine (Two issues)
    • December 1999, the article titled “News From The Front”, by Wolf Schneider.
    • June 2000, the article “He Got Game” by Jeffrey Lantos.

  • Vanity Fair
The US edition of this magazine from December 1998 offers an article titled “Pop Goes Caviezel”, a sure way to remember how to say the last name properly.

  • Added May 2, 2002
    Film Review
A fine article, “Red Peril” about the Malick film, ‘Red Line’, details first-person reports about what it means to act with Malick. This is the April 1999 issue which also ranks the film with 4/5 stars, names Mr Caviezel second just after Sean Penn while labeling him a ‘newcomer’.
You can also find the colour photo we use on the ‘Red Line’ page.

  • Added May 5, 2002
    Film Comment
“let there be light” titles this article that gives the most amount of ink to Mr Caviezel’s character, Private Witt, that we have seen in ‘Red Line’ articles. But mostly, this article is about Malick and patterns in his storytelling craft. The edition from January, February 1999 also uses a face shot of Mr Caviezel as Private Witt on its cover. (You can find this shot on our ‘Red Line’ page, in the center.)
