Writing Task 5--Human Rights Research and Essay

Part I

  1. You will be randomly assigned a country or human rights violation.
  2. Go to http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html

Read quickly through the list of rights so that you have an idea of various violations.

  1. Do an online search for information.

Begin with http://www.google.com.

Enter your country human rights violations in the box, i.e.,

Sudan human rights violations and press the enter key.

  1. Read through the offerings and look for 3 sources that discuss the same violation.   For example, if your country is Iran, you want to look for three violations of peaceful assembly, or 3 violations of women’s rights, or 3 violations of religious persecution, or 3 violations of political persecution, etc.
  2. DO NOT PRINT FULL ARTICLES.

Use your word processing skills to cut and paste what you need to a word document.  Change the margins to 0.5 for top, bottom, and left and right margins.  [Writing Task 4 skills]

Highlight, copy, and paste the part of the article you want on the Word page.  Then, highlight, copy and past

a.      The http address

b.      The title, author, publication and date of the article

When you have cut and pasted the three sources you need, then you may print ONE COPY.   YOU MAY ONLY USE 2 PIECES OF PAPER SO YOU WILL HAVE TO PLAN CAREFULLY!

  1. Now, prepare to begin your essay writing.
    1.  You will need an introduction for your country and human rights violation.
    2. The body of your essay presents the information from the 3 examples of the violation that you found during your online search.
    3. You will need a transition that moves from your reporting of facts to a paragraph where you give your opinion—which is backed up by supporting details, definitions, and examples.
    4.  The essay needs a conclusion with a “therefore” type of statement that explains what you think should be done to stop the violations or why you think stopping the violations are important.
  2. Type the first draft.  Highlight and double-space it.  Do a dictionary check.  Print one double-spaced copy to edit.
  3. After corrections have been made, print 2 copies of the final draft.  One to turn in and one to save in your “portfolio” of completed writing tasks.
  4. You must type a bibliography giving credit to your sources.  You must also cite your visuals or illustrations.

Use the APA Style Sheet at http://www.apastyle.org/elecref.html

Look for electronic sources.  General Form for Electronic References

Match what you have for sources to the format for the bibliography.
