Pompeii

Whereas many of the ruins I have visited are various-sized collections of temples and perhaps some dwellings, Pompeii is truly a city.  The streets still show the wheel ruts and from the center one can look more than a kilometer in any direction and still see Pompeii.  It's mammoth.

A private residence.

Above: the public bath complete with shelves to keep your things.

Below: Victims of the 79 AD Vesuvius eruption were killed and buried along with the city itself.  Archaeologists were able to find the spaces the bodies occupied before decomposition and then create plaster casts that reveal in chilling detail the moment of death.

Considering the disturbing nature of these preservations of someone's final moments, it seems even stranger to see them stacked alongside generic odds and ends as though awaiting the next garage sale or a bid from another museum.
