Chapter 1

"Do we really have to be here or can I leave now?"

Lina and Gourry gobbled their food at an alarming rate as Zelgadis spoke. Amelia also seemed to want to leave, but only for Zel's sake. Lina slowed her eating to a stop and turned around. "I know you want the cure for your curse, but this time, we're going to help you find it. And we'll leave as soon as we're done eating."

Zelgadis sighed. Just when he had found a clue to the cure, he had to be followed by Lina and the others. He felt like Lina's lackey, but could hardly do anything to stop her.

At the rate they were eating, it didn't take too long for them to finish. And they picked up the pace a bit because Zel was getting impatient. They left the restaurant and started to leave the city.

"So, Zelgadis," Gourry said, "where did you say that place was?"

"It's in the ruins just to the west of here," Zel answered in his usually serious tone and pointed to the left.

After a relatively short walk and much complaining on Lina's part about not being able to order dessert, the group reached the ruins of an old temple. Though it did not look too shabby, it was clearly unkempt and abandoned. But as they approached, they heard some voices from inside.

"Sounds like someone beat us here," said Amelia.

"Sounds to me like bandits," Zelgadis noted.

"Bandits!" Amelia cried. "Oh, no! We have to stop them."

"I'm way ahead of you," said Lina, running inside. "If there are bandits here, then there must be treasure."

Lina ran through the hallway and into the first room. The group of bandits were there and there were only five of them. They turned around and one of them immediately said, "Who are you?"

"I am the beautiful, sorcery genius, Lina Inverse."

"Lina Inverse: the bandit killer?!"

"Lina Inverse: the natural enemy of all who live?!?!"

"Lina Inverse: that flat-chested, little witch?!?!?!"

Lina looked ready to explode. "Why you...! Darkness beyond twighlight. Crimson beyond blood that flows. Buried in the stream of time..."

Lina hurried through the incantation with evident rage in her voice. The bandits could do nothing except stand and watch. Lina continued.

"...In thy great name, I pledge myself to darkness. Let the fools who stand before us be destroyed by the power you and I possess. DRAGON SLAVE!!!"

The explosion was great and the bandits had no way to survive. Apparently, neither did the temple because it collapsed into a pile of rubble the moment the explosion went off.

Gourry, Amelia, and Zelgadis ran inside at once. Zel was first to speak. "What are you trying to do, blow up the entire temple?"

"Did you really need to use the Dragon Slave?" asked Gourry.

"It doesn't matter," Lina answered, calmly. "There was nothing here. It seems that both we and the bandits were given false information and led here."

Amelia spoke up. "Well, there's still a room you haven't destroyed," she said, pointing. "Maybe there's something there."

There was still one room that remained. In fact, it seemed completely untouched by the explosion. Not spending time thinking about that, the group rushed to the chamber and Zelgadis opened the door.

They entered to see a most remarkable sight. This room, like the others, was also empty. But in the center of the room was a dark, swirling vortex that seemed to be a portal. Before they knew it, all four of them were being drawn in. There was nothing they could do. In a matter of seconds, they began to spiral down into the void.

Soon, they saw a bright light from below. Then, they saw a patch of green and fell onto the grass below them. They stood up, came to their senses, and looked around. They were in a place that was very different from their home. The grass they were on was neatly cut. They were in front of a large house, which was in a row of several houses. At the front of each house was a strange container on a pole. Some of these containers had paper in them. There was a long, gray road in front of them, and occasionally, the could see a strange machine moving along the road at a great speed.

This strange new place that the Slayers had entered was known to it's inhabitants as Earth.
