| Many of the Original members of the Second Virginia were members of a company from the Prewar 31st Regiment Virginia Militia. That Militia unit was comprised of residences from Winchester and Frederick County. Company F was called the Wincester Riflemen and was composed almost entirely of Winchester Residence. As the War progressed, all of the companies in the 2nd began recruiting outside of their main residence. One Extreme example of this occured on April 16th, 1862. On that day, the 2nd was camped outside of New Market, Virginia in Rockingham County The Second Virginia recruited over 91 volunteers on that day alone. Company F aquireed 56 out of the 91 from that days total. From that day forward a majority of the members of Company F did not come from Frederick County. On this page you will find articles dealing with military and civilian first person research on Company F of the 2nd Virginia and with the civilians of Winchester.
