Warrier Samajam

ORIGINS OF THE SAMAJAM

There have been many isolated attempts in the past to organize the Warriers of Kerala into societies/samajams. A few isolated societies of the Warriers existed in some localities in Kerala. However, a real concentrated and dedicated effort to organize the Warriers all over Kerala started around the year 1978 only. These culminated in the formal launching of the present Warrier Samajam during 1978 - 1979. At that time the official headquarters was Kottayam. Since the completion of the building at Akshaya at Guruvayoor, the headquarters have been shifted to Akshaya. The Registered Office is at Kottayam and the Administrative Office is in Guruvayoor. Among the personalities who worked hard for the formation of the Samajam may be mentioned Sri Mazhuvannor Sankara Warrier, the first President, Sri. E. Sankara Warrier, Sri. C.K. Achutha Warrier etc. The Warrier Samajam was formally registered in 1979

MEMBERSHIP, ORGANIZATION

The membership is open to all those who belong to the Warrier Community. There is an ordinary membership as well as a Life Membership.

The former headquarters of the Samajam was in Kottayam. After the construction of its own building was over, the headquarters has been moved to the Akshaya in Guruvayoor.

The Samajam has three Zones, the North (UTHARA MEKHALA), the Centre (MADHYA MEKHALA) and the South (DAKSHINE MEKHALA). Then there are District units and local units. The administartion of the Samajam is by a Central Executive Committee consisting of the President, Vice President, Secretary, the Treasurer and one representative from each of the three zones.

The local units hold monthly meetings to discuss about general affairs of particular interest to the members. There will be also annual general body meetings at the unit level. The office bearers of the local unit committes are elected in the annual general  body meetings.  The units conduct cultural celebrations and contests and tours.

The Office bearers of the Central Committee are also elected in the General body meeting of the Samajam, held at the Headquarters at Guruvayoor. Their term of office is one year.

At present the Samajam has units not only in Kerala but also in other states.

ACTIVITIES OF THE SAMAJAM

The primary aim of the samajam was to organize all the warriers in Kerala under one banner.  As such, the general aim of the samajam is to work for the general well being and overall development of the community.  It  caters to the cultural, social and economic  needs of the community. In the monthly meetings of the local units, general problems of the community as a whole and those of the individual families are discussed. Cultural events are celebrated. Competitions are held for various cultural/literary items and prizes are awarded. Many local units hold chitties for the benefit of the members. The samajam also helps the member families in the conduct of marriages, Sradhams etc. both in the manual help as well as financial in the case of very needy and deserving cases. The Samajam brings out a monthly publication called THEERTHAM to cater to the literary talents of its members. It also brings out a Calender by the same name.
