LINKS

These are some links I have found useful for getting information about Ukraine and about the cities of Kharkiv (called Kharkiv in Ukrainian, Kharkov in Russian) and Khmelnytsky. Most links have information in English and either Russian or Ukrainian, often all three languages. I now feel I am at the point where I can recognize the difference between Russian and Ukrainian, so if the page has only one language I call it as I see it.

Some of you may be asking, why the continued profileration of the Russian language in independent Ukraine? Because although Ukrainian has been the official language since 1990, most Ukrainians grew up speaking Russian and don't speak much Ukrainian. This is particularly true in eastern Ukraine, which is closer to the Russian border.  I've also read that in the east people feel more politically aligned with Communism. In points west of Kyiv where there are fewer Russians and more nationalist sentiment (especially in Lviv), people prefer Ukrainian.
