Chapter Eighteen
“I’ve got to be honest, I think you know. We’re covered in lies and that’s okay. And there’s somewhere beyond this, I know, but I hope I can find the words to say. Never again, no... No never again.. ‘Cause you’re a god, and I am not and I just thought you would know. ‘Cause you’re a god and I am not, and I just thought I’d let you go.” -‘You’re a God’ Vertical Horizon

Reno lay on the sand, a beach blanket Karia had laid out earlier was beneath him. Sunglasses finally covered his eyes, rather than sitting upon the top of his head as usual, and he wore a pair of black swimming trunks. Leaning up on his elbows he looked around. Further up the coast a large cluster of towns people and tourists were swimming, though he and Karia has moved down the beach to avoid the noisy crowd and screaming kids. Not to mention the fact that he, being a former Shinra employee, wasn't exactly looked highly upon by the society. Karia had gone to change after their lunch, but that had been at least ten minutes ago.
Where could she be... couldn't take her that long to get changed. I didn't see what she brought for a swim suit, but I'm sure it can't be overly difficult to put on. He snickered to himself and lay back down against the blanket, the sand beneath felt good, as did the sunshine on his front. She's probably just trying to sneak in those damnable katanas's and is fighting with someone about them being dangerous. All the while screaming death threats.
Laughing again he smiled and nodded to himself contend with his theory. He sat up suddenly, shielding his eyes he looked down the beach as he heard some distant whoops and whistles. "What the..?"
A figure wrapping a towel around itself, which by all means had to be Karia was coming his way. He watched her near and was surprised to see a blush on her face.
"What's going on 'Ria?" questioned the red head as he moved over to the other side of the blanket and let the young woman sit down.
"Um.. nothing.." This swimsuit is what is the problem..
"Somehow I don't believe you," he smirked, "so why are you blushing, and covering yourself with a rather large towel. Not to mention a rather large red towel, the color doesn't do much for stealth you know," he winked at her.
"You're one to talk.." Karia murmured as she eyed Reno's hair, then mumbled the rest of the reply but he couldn't make out much of what she said.
Ignoring the remark about his hair the red head smirked, "What was that 'Ria?"
"I SAID, I don't like walking around half naked, it's embarrassing!"
"Why in hell would you think it was embarrassing? Hey I'm wearing less than you are ya know.." commented Reno, somewhat proudly.
"It just.. IS!" Karia commented as she hugged the towel tighter to herself.
"So what was that thing you already had in mind to swim in any way huh?" pried Reno with a smirk. He was obviously amused, the brunette wasn't so cocky with her statements presently and he rather liked having the upper hand again.
"Alright, alright!!" yelled Karia as she stood up in defeat and threw down her towel. Reno, if nothing else, was very persistent and she thought it easier to just give into his taunting than put up with his attitude any longer. She did a quick circle then looked down at the red head on the blanket, "happy now?"
Black really is her color.. Thought Reno as he looked up at the slightly agitated and uncomfortable woman before him. A one piece swim suit, complete with an emerald wrap around, her hair was up as well. I don't see why she'd be embarrassed though. "You look fine 'Ria so stop overreacting," smirked Reno as he rose as well. I didn't know she was so self-conscious.
"Really...?" she asked, obviously somewhat doubtful of the fact.
"Yes really. Now don't bother arguing, let's go swimming!" he shouted as he appointed himself the winner of the argument and ran towards the water.
Karia watching him for a few moments as she thought to herself.
Heh, coming to the beach wasn't such a bad idea after all.. this wrap still covers a lot, and he's right about one fact, he IS wearing less than me. She smiled and shook her head as she watched him wave to her to come into the water then bounced around like a three year old on a sugar high.
Starting her way towards the water she looked at her feet.
Hey there's some nice shells down here, probably because there's hardly ever anyone down this far. Stopping by the edge of the water she started to pick up random shells that caught her attention. She quickly forgot about going into the water for the time being as she became highly interested in the items in the sand.
"Hey Turkey loo-- AH!!!" called Karia as she found a shell of various colors then dropped her small collection as she was swiped off her feet, literally, by wet arms.
"Gotcha! Now into the water with you!" laughed Reno as he carried the brunette into the water until he was up to his waste in the liquid.
He was acting truly very much unlike a Turk and Karia, even though she was shocked by his actions, found such to be appealing. She liked his carefree side. He needed to show it more, it seemed good for him. Squirming a bit she started to yell random threats and various violent comments but such went unnoticed, or rather ignored by the suddenly lighthearted Turk.
Holding on Karia with a stronger grip Reno let out a laugh and fell back into the water, taking the female with him. Staying underwater for only a few seconds Reno stood back up still holding Karia in his arms, for once pushing his luck on more than likely getting the hell pounded out of him. He laughed as her eyes were wide from surprise, but the humor died as she didn't say anything yet started to cough and grab at him as her eyes started to water.
".. whoa, hey 'Ria you alright?" asked Reno rather concerned as he started to carry her quickly back to the shore.
She shook her head yes but continued to cough as she leaned against him. He set her down when they got to the blanket on the shore and she continued to cough as she leaned against him. Pointing to her nap sack which lay a couple feet away, Reno took the hint and looked in and found a water bottle. Passing it to her she grabbed it quickly and took a drink. As the agitating salt was washed from her throat she sighed in relief and slumped back against Reno.
washed the salt taste from her throat she flopped down on the blanket.
Reno looked down at her rather shocked, "whoa sorry about that, didn't mean for ya to half choke to death on me there.." he spoke as he scratched the back of his head rather awkwardly. He didn't quite know what to do at the moment and it clearly showed.
"Nah, s'ok, don't worry about it Turkey," Karia finally spoke and wiped at her eyes as she rose. Reno got up after seconds after and brushed some sand off himself.
Reno watched her walk over to the pile of shells she dropped earlier, then she came back and tucked them into a pouch on her nap sack. "Well still, I didn't want anything to happen to you.." he confessed.
Turning around, she looked up at him.
I didn't think he cared so much... maybe then.. something.. us perhaps.. He just looks so concerned, it fuels my hope. Acting on impulse she leaned forward and softly pressed her lips to his, he started to respond after the initial shock, then pulled away.
"Uh sorry.. I think we better get ready to go...." The red head explained as he turned around and started to gather his things.
Karia looked at him dumbfounded for a second.
...What have I done.. She thought, then turned and started to gather her things. Wiping her eyes, she kept her back to him so he couldn't see her face.
Picking up his shirt and pulling it on Reno stared at the sand for a moment then closed his eyes as a memory flashed before him.

A young woman with jet black hair to her shoulders and vibrant blue eyes lay lifeless on her bed, blood covered her. The walls of the room and the once white sheets were now stained crimson. A bloody pen and a note lay beside her on the bed with his name at the top. All it read was 'Forgive me, I promised I'd never leave you. I'm sor' and it ended there. As the author hadn't enough strength to finish writing.

Reno grabbed the rest of his things and started up the beach without looking back to see if Karia was following.
Gods I'm a wuss.. but I can't watch anyone else leave again, I can't do this. No.. I won't let it happen.
