|||||||||||||||||
Crazy Horse Monument is being carved from an enormous mountain in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Crazy Horse mountain carving will be the world's largest sculpture. When completed, it will be 563 feet high and 641 feet long, carved in the round. It is the focal point of an educational and cultural memorial to and for the North American Indian. The memorial is a non-profit project, which began in 1947. |

In 1939, Sioux Indian Chief Henry Standing Bear wrote to Boston-born sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and asked him to carve Crazy Horse in the mountins of the Black Hills. Sioux Chiefs wanted to show the White man that the Indians had their great heroes too. In 1947, at the age of 38, the self-taught "storyteller in stone" arrived in the Black Hills to carve a likeness of Crazy Horse. Korczak continued work on the monument until his death in 1982. The project is being continued by Korczak's wife, Ruth, and seven of their ten children. | |||||||||||||||||
