Well, today marks the shopping days until christmas down to only two weeks. TWO WEEKS! Man, I haven’t even started yet. How about yourself? Hopefully, because there’s only TWO WEEKS!

Those that read the Japanese version of Playboy already probably know this, but apparently it’s useful for something besides nudie pics! The latest issue features an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto where he discusses two of his upcoming projects, namely Pikmin 2 and a new Mario. So far it’s known as Mario 128 to the world at large, and is based on the demo from Spaceworld 2000. (Here’s a little picture to remind you of that work). That didn’t feature much, but it’s a new Mario for God sakes! That spells ROCK!

For those already looking forward to the next generation of game consoles we have a nice slice of news for you. The next Xbox will infact be, wait for it … smaller! In the new issue of Famitsu magazine Hirohisa Chura of Miscrosoft Japan led on that the next generation machine would also be released in a more strategic time frame from allowing the Sony system the head start it enjoys in the current console wars.

Iinterested in working in the gaming industry? Codemasters can help, with a series of articles aimed at the budding game developer called “Careers in the Game Industry”. The series of three “guides” focus on the areas of graphics, programming, and quality controls, and deal with matters such as education, salaries, and interview tips. The articles are all written by employees currently working at Codemasters, and are a pretty neat peek into an indutry many gamers dream about going into.

Gaming conventions are always a source of excitement for gaming fans. They often offer first looks at up coming games, as well as bags of free swag! For those interested in attending such events you have two options coming up in recent months. At the LA Conventions Center will be the Ultimate Games Expo. The UGE is a three day event, which corresponds with an Xgames event just next door, and lets gamers try out new games, participate in tournaments, and even attend some workshops about game design. The event is slated for Aug 15-17 of next year.

The other big convention news is the Design Innovate Communicate Entertain (DICE) Summit. The DICE event takes place Feb 27-28 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. It will be home to many seminars ranging from such topics as online gaming to boosting sales. Also of note are appearances by reknowned gaming gurus Yu Suzuki and Shigeru Miyamoto. The DICE website contains a full roster of other guests as well.

Well, that’s it for today kids. Now get off my lawn!
