Revelation 20

By: Richard Puckett

As in most books of the Bible there is lots to try and learn the truth of. I repeat as I have in other studies these are my ideals. As we learn its good to look at views even if not as our own. Please look with a open mind. The blue is commentary from Believers study bible and Matthew Henrys. Often there are those that think they know all the answers are tell you they have some certain enlightenment that makes them right and everyone else wrong. Many great men of the past and now study this word and are far more educated then I, this is just what I see. Look and try and find the truth as you see it, in fact I recommend that you draw your own ideal before you read what any of us has to say. Just make sure you have bible put in context to support your view, if not, it's a good guess you're not right.

Revelation 20: (v. 1-3) Satan is bound for a thousand years.

(v. 4-6) The first resurrection; those are blessed that have part therein.

(v. 7-10) Satan loosed, Gog and Magog.

(v. 11-15) The last and general resurrection.

Satan is bound for a thousand years

(Rev 20:1 KJV) And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

Chapter 20 introduces the glorious reign of Christ known as the Millennium. Mille (Lat.) means "thousand," while annum (Lat.) means "years." These are the characteristics of that reign: (1) the binding of Satan in the abyss, i.e., "bottomless pit" (vv. 2, 3); (2) the reigning of previously glorified saints along with Christ (v. 4); and (3) the monumental reversal of the curse of sin upon the earth (cf. Isa. 2:1-5; 11:1-9; Jer. 31:31-34; Joel 3:17-21; Amos 9:11-15; Mic. 4:1-5; Luke 1:31-33; 1 Cor. 15:24-28). The purposes of this kingdom age may be summarized as follows: (1) to fulfill the prophecies of the O.T. and the N.T. which prophesy such an era; (2) to demonstrate the blessings of God when the conditions of His economy are met; and (3) to demonstrate that even under utopian conditions with Satan himself bound, men born during the Millennium demonstrate the innate sinfulness of the human heart, and at the conclusion of the age rebel against a good and merciful God.

Rev 20:1: Verses 1-3. Here is a vision, showing by a figure the restraints laid on Satan himself. Christ, with Almighty power, will keep the devil from deceiving mankind as he has hitherto done. He never wants power and instruments to break the power of Satan. Christ shuts by his power, and seals by his authority. The church shall have a time of peace and prosperity, but all her trials are not yet over.

(Rev 20:2 KJV) And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

When was that time, there are many ideals, I will mention a few, and you can decide. One is that Satan was bound while the judgement process was taking place which could be at least a thousand years. Two this may have been during the time called the dark ages after the old and before the new testament. Three some believe it’s a time yet to come.

(Rev 20:3 KJV) And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

The first resurrection; those are blessed that have part therein

(Rev 20:4 KJV) And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

1 Pet 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

1 Pet 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

I believe that this is the first stage of the judgement process. The church, the followers of Christ are called first to stand before God. Notice I saw the souls of them were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, this would be those like John the Baptist. The question to me is when did they get there. Mat 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; Mat 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, Mat 27:53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Mat 27:54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. I think this passage is often ignored. But could it be this is those that sat upon the throne. Part of my reason for thinking this is there is no evidence of any other time of a thing like this. The problem is if so then it changes how we look at the mark, yet remember Jesus said that some that were living would not see death till they saw him coming in glory. I am not going to tell you I have some special gift or leading here, I don't. Yet I will say that I have read many others views and they don't add up. Part of the issue of course is to determine when Satan I set free. I tend to lean toward the ideal that he is on the move now, and that when he is cast into the lake is the time we are waiting to see. It makes sense to me that those who gave their life for him even extending into the early church would be those mentioned above. If so it would appear as in the old times before Christ they were taken when they died. The thousand years is not really a mark of time such as a day for God see's time somewhat different then us. I guess here is a good place to say, no one really knows for sure what is meant here, so don't go to a fist fight with someone that sees this different. Anyone who says they know for sure how all this is and what will be, I would say you could look at and know not to pay to much attention to him at all.

John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

John 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Rev 20:4: Verses 4-6. Here is an account of the reign of the saints, for the same space of time as Satan is bound. Those who suffer with Christ, shall reign with him in his spiritual and heavenly kingdom, in conformity to him in his wisdom, righteousness, and holiness: this is called the first resurrection, with which none but those who serve Christ, and suffer for him, shall be favoured. The happiness of these servants of God is declared. None can be blessed but those that are holy; and all that are holy shall be blessed. We know something thing of what the first death is, and it is very awful; but we know not what this second death is. It must be much more dreadful; it is the death of the soul, eternal separation from God. May we never know what it is: those who have been made partakers of a spiritual resurrection, are saved from the power of the second death. We may expect that a thousand years will follow the destruction of the antichristian, idolatrous, persecuting powers, during which pure Christianity, in doctrine, worship, and holiness, will be made known over all the earth. By the all-powerful working of the Holy Spirit, fallen man will be new-created; and faith and holiness will as certainly prevail, as unbelief and unholiness now do. We may easily perceive what a variety of dreadful pains, diseases, and other calamities would cease, if all men were true and consistent Christians. All the evils of public and private contests would be ended, and happiness of every kind largely increased. Every man would try to lighten suffering, instead of adding to the sorrows around him. It is our duty to pray for the promised glorious days, and to do every thing in our public and private stations which can prepare for them.

(Rev 20:5 KJV) But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

(Rev 20:6 KJV) Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Satan loosed, Gog and Magog

(Rev 20:7 KJV) And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

I think now is when Satan is loosed, I think today he is working to destroy you and that the final judgement is just around the bend.

Rev 20:7: Verses 7-10. While this world lasts, Satan's power in it will not be wholly destroyed, though it may be limited and lessened. No sooner is Satan let loose, than he again begins deceiving the nations, and stirring them up to make war with the saints and servants of God. It would be well if the servants and ministers of Christ were as active and persevering in doing good, as his enemies in doing mischief. God will fight this last and decisive battle for his people, that the victory may be complete, and the glory be to himself.

The release of Satan enables that evil spirit to mount one final offensive against the Lord of life. Gog and Magog, mentioned in Ezek. 38, indicate a confederation which, though vast and powerful, is still no equal to God. Fire from heaven ends the rebellion, and Satan follows the beast and false prophet into hell.

(Rev 20:8 KJV) And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

I see all the things listed below as now, not somewhere down the road.

The troubles before the destruction of Jerusalem

(Mat 24:4 KJV) And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

Mat 24:4: Verses 4-28. The disciples had asked concerning the times, When these things should be? Christ gave them no answer to that; but they had also asked, What shall be the sign? This question he answers fully. The prophecy first respects events near at hand, the destruction of Jerusalem, the end of the Jewish church and state, the calling of the Gentiles, and the setting up of Christ's kingdom in the world; but it also looks to the general judgment; and toward the close, points more particularly to the latter. What Christ here said to his disciples, tended more to promote caution than to satisfy their curiosity; more to prepare them for the events that should happen, than to give a distinct idea of the events. This is that good understanding of the times which all should covet, thence to infer what Israel ought to do. Our Saviour cautions his disciples to stand on their guard against false teachers. And he foretells wars and great commotions among nations. From the time that the Jews rejected Christ, and he left their house desolate, the sword never departed from them. See what comes of refusing the gospel. Those who will not hear the messengers of peace, shall be made to hear the messengers of war. But where the heart is fixed, trusting in God, it is kept in peace, and is not afraid. It is against the mind of Christ, that his people should have troubled hearts, even in troublous times. When we looked forward to the eternity of misery that is before the obstinate refusers of Christ and his gospel, we may truly say, The greatest earthly judgments are but the beginning of sorrows. It is comforting that some shall endure even to the end. Our Lord foretells the preaching of the gospel in all the world. The end of the world shall not be till the gospel has done its work. Christ foretells the ruin coming upon the people of the Jews; and what he said here, would be of use to his disciples, for their conduct and for their comfort. If God opens a door of escape, we ought to make our escape, otherwise we do not trust God, but tempt him. It becomes Christ's disciples, in times of public trouble, to be much in prayer: that is never out of season, but in a special manner seasonable when we are distressed on every side. Though we must take what God sends, yet we may pray against sufferings; and it is very trying to a good man, to be taken by any work of necessity from the solemn service and worship of God on the sabbath day. But here is one word of comfort, that for the elect's sake these days shall be made shorter than their enemies designed, who would have cut all off, if God, who used these foes to serve his own purpose, had not set bounds to their wrath. Christ foretells the rapid spreading of the gospel in the world. It is plainly seen as the lightning. Christ preached his gospel openly. The Romans were like an eagle, and the ensign of their armies was an eagle. When a people, by their sin, make themselves as loathsome carcasses, nothing can be expected but that God should send enemies to destroy them. It is very applicable to the day of judgment, the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in that day, 2 Thessalonians 2:1. Let us give diligence to make our calling and election sure; then may we know that no enemy or deceiver shall ever prevail against us.

(Mat 24:5 KJV) For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

(Mat 24:6 KJV) And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

Can you count the wars that have taken place the nations destroyed?

(Mat 24:7 KJV) For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

(Mat 24:8 KJV) All these are the beginning of sorrows.

(Mat 24:9 KJV) Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

(Mat 24:10 KJV) And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

(Mat 24:11 KJV) And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

1 Cor 9:14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

(Mat 24:12 KJV) And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

Is there any of these things you don't see all around you?

(Mat 24:13 KJV) But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Here is an important key, endure to the end.

(Mat 24:14 KJV) And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Acts 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

Acts 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

Acts 2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

Acts 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

(Mat 24:15 KJV) When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

(Mat 24:16 KJV) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

(Mat 24:17 KJV) Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

(Mat 24:18 KJV) Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

(Mat 24:19 KJV) And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

(Mat 24:20 KJV) But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

(Mat 24:21 KJV) For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

(Mat 24:22 KJV) And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

(Mat 24:23 KJV) Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

(Mat 24:24 KJV) For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

(Mat 24:25 KJV) Behold, I have told you before.

(Mat 24:26 KJV) Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

(Mat 24:27 KJV) For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

(Mat 24:28 KJV) For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

Christ foretells other signs and miseries, to the end of the world

(Mat 24:29 KJV) Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Mat 24:29: Verses 29-41. Christ foretells his second coming. It is usual for prophets to speak of things as near and just at hand, to express the greatness and certainty of them. Concerning Christ's second coming, it is foretold that there shall be a great change, in order to the making all things new. Then they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds. At his first coming, he was set for a sign that should be spoken against, but at his second coming, a sign that should be admired. Sooner or later, all sinners will be mourners; but repenting sinners look to Christ, and mourn after a godly sort; and those who sow in those tears shall shortly reap in joy. Impenitent sinners shall see Him whom they have pierced, and, though they laugh now, shall mourn and weep in endless horror and despair. The elect of God are scattered abroad; there are some in all places, and all nations; but when that great gathering day comes, there shall not one of them be missing. Distance of place shall keep none out of heaven. Our Lord declares that the Jews should never cease to be a distinct people, until all things he had been predicting were fulfilled. His prophecy reaches to the day of final judgment; therefore he here, vs. 34, foretells that Judah shall never cease to exist as a distinct people, so long as this world shall endure. Men of the world scheme and plan for generation upon generation here, but they plan not with reference to the overwhelming, approaching, and most certain event of Christ's second coming, which shall do away every human scheme, and set aside for ever all that God forbids. That will be as surprising a day, as the deluge to the old world. Apply this, first, to temporal judgments, particularly that which was then hastening upon the nation and people of the Jews. Secondly, to the eternal judgment. Christ here shows the state of the old world when the deluge came. They were secure and careless; they knew not, until the flood came; and they believed not. Did we know aright that all earthly things must shortly pass away, we should not set our eyes and hearts so much upon them as we do. The evil day is not the further off for men's putting it far from them. What words can more strongly describe the suddenness of our Saviour's coming! Men will be at their respective businesses, and suddenly the Lord of glory will appear. Women will be in their house employments, but in that moment every other work will be laid aside, and every heart will turn inward and say, It is the Lord! Am I prepared to meet him? Can I stand before him? And what, in fact, is the day of judgment to the whole world, but the day of death to every one?

(Mat 24:30 KJV) And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

(Mat 24:31 KJV) And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

(Mat 24:32 KJV) Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

(Mat 24:33 KJV) So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

(Mat 24:34 KJV) Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

(Mat 24:35 KJV) Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

(Mat 24:36 KJV) But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

(Mat 24:37 KJV) But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

(Mat 24:38 KJV) For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

(Mat 24:39 KJV) And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

(Mat 24:40 KJV) Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

(Mat 24:41 KJV) Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

Exhortations to watchfulness

(Mat 24:42 KJV) Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Mat 24:42: Verses 42-51. To watch for Christ's coming, is to maintain that temper of mind which we would be willing that our Lord should find us in. We know we have but a little time to live, we cannot know that we have a long time to live; much less do we know the time fixed for the judgment. Our Lord's coming will be happy to those that shall be found ready, but very dreadful to those that are not. If a man, professing to be the servant of Christ, be an unbeliever, covetous, ambitious, or a lover of pleasure, he will be cut off. Those who choose the world for their portion in this life, will have hell for their portion in the other life. May our Lord, when he cometh, pronounce us blessed, and present us to the Father, washed in his blood, purified by his Spirit, and fit to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.

(Mat 24:43 KJV) But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

(Mat 24:44 KJV) Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

(Mat 24:45 KJV) Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?

(Mat 24:46 KJV) Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

(Mat 24:47 KJV) Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.

(Mat 24:48 KJV) But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;

(Mat 24:49 KJV) And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;

(Mat 24:50 KJV) The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

(Mat 24:51 KJV) And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

2 Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

2 Th 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

2 Th 2:5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

2 Th 2:6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

2 Th 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

2 Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

2 Th 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

2 Th 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

2 Th 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

2 Th 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

1 Th 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

1 Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

1 Th 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

1 Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

1 Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

1 Th 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

(Rev 20:9 KJV) And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

(Rev 20:10 KJV) And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Seems plain to me that Satan end comes after he has time to strike and play in the world while people seek a place to hide and find peace where there is no peace. I see this very much like the days of Noah, the rain coming down, death at their door, crying and seeking high ground, to have the water keep rising and death meets them.

The last and general resurrection

(Rev 20:11 KJV) And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

John 6:46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

1 Cor 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

1 Tim 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

1 John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

1 John 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

Here we see a glimpse of God. No man had ever seen him except through Christ. Now we see his throne, who can stand before God? Only those who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus, for then he is our father and we can approach him with out fear.

(vv. 11-15) Final judgment for unbelievers occurs at the Great White Throne. "Books" (plural form) refers to the cataloging of the thought- and action-life of all men. "Book" (singular) is a reference to the Lamb's Book of Life in which the names of all the redeemed are recorded. The event is for the purpose of demonstrating the perfect justice of God in His judgments. This is accomplished by revealing to men the essential sinfulness of their acts and thoughts and by further reminding them of their tragic failure to respond properly to the atoning grace of Christ. The consequence of these failures is that unbelievers join Satan, the beast, and the false prophet in hell, i.e., the lake of fire.

Rev 20:11: Verses 11-15. After the events just foretold, the end will speedily come; and there is no mention of any thing else, before the appearing of Christ to judge the world. This will be the great day: the Judge, the Lord Jesus Christ, will then put on majesty and terror. The persons to be judged are the dead, small and great; young and old, low and high, poor and rich. None are so mean, but they have some talents to account for; and none so great, as to avoid having to account for them. Not only those alive at the coming of Christ, but all the dead. There is a book of remembrance both for good and bad: and the book of the sinner's conscience, though formerly secret, will then be opened. Every man will recollect all his past actions, though he had long forgotten many of them. Another book shall be opened, the book of the Scriptures, the rule of life; it represents the Lord's knowledge of his people, and his declaring their repentance, faith, and good works; showing the blessings of the new covenant. By their works men shall be justified or condemned; he will try their principles by their practices. Those justified and acquitted by the gospel, shall be justified and acquitted by the Judge, and shall enter into eternal life, having nothing more to fear from death, or hell, or wicked men; for these are all destroyed together. This is the second death; it is the final separation of sinners from God. Let it be our great concern to see whether our Bibles justify or condemn us now; for Christ will judge the secrets of all men according to the gospel. Who shall dwell with devouring flames?

(Rev 20:12 KJV) And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Rom 14:11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

Rom 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

Phil 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

Phil 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

In the day of last judgement ever one shall stand before God. There are many who see this as a different time then the judgement of the church. I see it as a group of things that happen, its like if you were describing to some one a person driving down the road, you would have to tell the steps one at a time though all the things were taking place almost at the same time. Notice that the dead were judged out of books, this is sometimes called the books of judgement. What comes to issue here that cannot be ignored, is there is one book called out special, the book of life.

Phil 4:3 And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.

Rev 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Rev 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Rev 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Rev 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

It would seem to me that all those in the world has had a record kept, I believe that this was done by angels appointed to record our deeds. The key to making in to heaven requires the listing of our name in this book of life. Its interesting that the old testament never mentions this book. I think that is because in the Old Testament times the person was basically judged at the time of his death. Yet realize they did not enter into the new heavens prepared for the followers of Christ.

(Rev 20:13 KJV) And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Hell delivers up its dead, the sea, and death. I find this interesting too, death sounds like a place not a state of being as we are often taught. Death is the time in which the flesh, or soul of man no longer lives. The soul can live and the body be dead, the body can be alive and soul dead. Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Mat 4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

Mat 10:21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.

Mat 15:4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. (notice if you die you die, but here it says die the death)

Mat 16:28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. (I have heard many explanations on this in my life time, let me toss one more, seems that there is dying which is sleeping, but then there is dying which is a place where the dead are. All my life I have known sane people that would tell you they have seen ghosts, even Saul brought Samuel back from the Dead. It would seem to me that if one reaches the place of death, they sleep or they are imprisoned there. But there were and are some who die in the flesh but are not given the peace of the place called death. Thus could be they are roaming Spirits, I just toss this out as a thought not a positive because I don't know for sure.)

Mat 20:18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, (Keep in mind the Bible says Christ was the first fruits of those being raised from the dead, yet we know many were brought back to life, so unless there is two different states of dying its hard to reconcile what is being taught.)

Mark 10:33 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:

Luke 18:33 And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (Those that accept Christ shall never die, because this place is not a place they can enter, for we have passed from death unto life. The body while in sin is dead, in the sight of God, and we only live when except Christ. By faith and our service to him we become as if we had ate from the tree of life because in spirit we have.)

Heb 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Rom 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

Rom 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

Rom 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

Rom 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Rom 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Rom 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

Rom 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

Rom 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Rom 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

John 8:51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Acts 2:25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:

Acts 2:26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:

Rom 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Rom 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Rom 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Rom 1:31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Rom 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. (Who do those things listed are worthy of death, this seems to be more of a place as well as a condition. I think here is where part of the key may lie. For those that turn away from God and become reprobates are setting the end condition, they are worthy of death. Let me point you to a place in Jude, Jude 1:12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; This is why I believe its possible to backslide and lose out on heaven, you go to this place called death and death will give up its dead and be judged.)

Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Rom 6:21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

Rom 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Rom 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Rom 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 Cor 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

1 Cor 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

1 Cor 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

1 Cor 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

1 Cor 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

1 Cor 15:27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.

1 Cor 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

1 Cor 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

Phil 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Phil 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

Phil 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

Col 1:22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

Col 1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

2 Tim 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

Heb 2:15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Heb 2:16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

Heb 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

Heb 2:18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

Heb 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Heb 9:16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

James 5:20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. (We, you the church has a great task, he which converteth the sinner shall save a soul from death.)

1 Pet 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

1 Pet 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; (could this be death, the place?)

1 Pet 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

1 Pet 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

1 Pet 3:22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

(Rev 20:14 KJV) And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Those prisons are finally destroyed; they are cast into the lake, why because they are no longer needed the world as we know it has ended. Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Heb 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. You and I shall die on earth, our bodies decay away, but our soul will never die if we are Gods.

(Rev 20:15 KJV) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

This seems pretty plain to me, if your name is not there, and it can only be there by faith and love and giving of yourself to Christ you will be cast into the lake of fire. This is the sinners end, Satan loses and so do those that follow him.

Revelation 20

An angel binds Satan a thousand years, and shuts him up in the bottomless pit, vv. 1-3.
They who were beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, who have part in the first
resurrection, and shall reign with Christ a thousand years, vv. 4-6. When the thousand
years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, shall go forth and deceive the
nations, and shall gather Gog and Magog from the four corners of the earth, vv. 7, 8.
These shall besiege the holy city; but fire shall come down from heaven and consume
them, and they and the devil be cast into a lake of fire, vv. 9, 10. The great white throne,
and the dead, small and great, standing before God, and all judged according to their
works, vv. 11, 12. The sea, death, and hades, give up their dead, and are destroyed; and
all not found in the book of life are cast into the lake of fire, vv. 13-15.

NOTES ON CHAPTER 20

Revelation 20:1

An angel came down from heaven—One of the executors of the Divine
justice, who receives criminals, and keeps them in prison, and delivers them up
only to be tried and executed.

The key of the prison and the chain show who he is; and as the chain was
great, it shows that the culprit was impeached of no ordinary crimes.

Revelation 20:2

The dragon—See the notes on Revelation 12:9.

That old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan—He who is called the old
serpent is the DEVIL—the calumniator, and SATAN—the opposer. He who
supposes that the term old serpent here plainly proves that the creature that
tempted our first parents was actually a snake, must enjoy his opinion; and those
who can receive such a saying, why let them receive it. Selah.

A thousand years—In what this binding of Satan consists, who can tell? How
many visions have been seen on this subject both in ancient and modern times!
This, and what is said Revelation 20:3-5, no doubt refers to a time in which the
influence of Satan will be greatly restrained, and the true Church of God enjoy
great prosperity, which shall endure for a long time. But it is not likely that the
number, a thousand years, is to be taken literally here, and year symbolically and
figuratively in all the book beside. The doctrine of the millennium, or of the
saints reigning on earth a thousand years, with Christ for their head, has been
illustrated and defended by many Christian writers, both among the ancients and
moderns. Were I to give a collection of the conceits of the primitive fathers on
this subject, my readers would have little reason to applaud my pains. It has long
been the idle expectation of many persons that the millennium, in their sense,
was at hand; and its commencement has been expected in every century since the
Christian era. It has been fixed for several different years, during the short period
of my own life! I believed those predictions to be vain, and I have lived to see
them such. Yet there is no doubt that the earth is in a state of progressive moral
improvement; and that the light of true religion is shining more copiously
everywhere, and will shine more and more to the perfect day. But when the
religion of Christ will be at its meridian of light and heat, we know not. In each
believer this may speedily take place; but probably no such time shall ever
appear, in which evil shall be wholly banished from the earth, till after the day of
judgment, when the earth having been burnt up, a new heaven and a new earth
shall be produced out of the ruins of the old, by the mighty power of God:
righteousness alone shall dwell in them. The phraseology of the apostle here
seems partly taken from the ancient prophets, and partly rabbinical; and it is from
the Jewish use of those terms that we are to look for their interpretation.

Revelation 20:3

He should deceive the nations no more—Be unable to blind men with
superstition and idolatry as he had formerly done.

Revelation 20:4

I saw thrones—Christianity established in the earth, the kings and governors
being all Christians.

Reigned with Christ a thousand years—I am satisfied that this period should
not be taken literally. It may signify that there shall be a long and undisturbed
state of Christianity; and so universally shall the Gospel spirit prevail, that it will
appear as if Christ reigned upon earth; which will in effect be the case, because
his Spirit shall rule in the hearts of men; and in this time the martyrs are
represented as living again; their testimony being revived, and the truth for which
they died, and which was confirmed by their blood, being now everywhere
prevalent. As to the term thousand years, it is a mystic number among the Jews.
Midrash Tillin, in Psalm 90:15, Make us glad according to the days wherein thou
hast afflicted us, adds, "by Babylon, Greece, and the Romans; and in the days of
the Messiah. How many are the days of the Messiah? Rab. Elieser, the son of R.
Jose, of Galilee, said, The days of the Messiah are a thousand years."

Sanhedrin, fol. 92, 1, cited by the Aruch, under the word ÷øéà says: "There is
a tradition in the house of Elias, that the righteous, whom the holy blessed God
shall raise from the dead, shall not return again to the dust; but for the space of a
thousand years, in which the holy blessed God shall renew the world, they shall
have wings like the wings of eagles, and shall fly above the waters." It appears
therefore that this phraseology is purely rabbinical. Both the Greeks and Latins
have the same form of speech in speaking on the state of the righteous and
wicked after death. There is something like this in the Republic of Plato, book x.,
p. 322, edit. Bip., where, speaking of Erus, the son of Armenius, who came to life
after having been dead twelve days, and who described the states of departed
souls, asserting "that some were obliged to make a long peregrination under the
earth before they arose to a state of happiness, åéíáé äå ôçí ðïñåéáí ÷éëéåôç, for
it was a journey of a thousand years," he adds, "that, as the life of man is rated at
a hundred years, those who have been wicked suffer in the other world a ten-fold
punishment, and therefore their punishment lasts a thousand years."

A similar doctrine prevailed among the Romans; whether they borrowed it
from the Greeks, or from the rabbinical Jews, we cannot tell.

Thus Virgil, speaking of the punishment of the wicked in the infernal regions,
says:—

Has omnes, ubi MILLE rotam volvere per annos,

Lethaeum ad fluvium Deus evocat agmine magno:

Scilicet immemores supera ut convexa revisant,

Rursus et incipiant in corpora velle reverti.

AEN., lib. vi., 748.

"But when a thousand rolling years are past,

So long their dreary punishment shall last,

Whole droves of spirits, by the driving god,

Are led to drink the deep Lethean flood

In large, forgetful draughts, to sleep the cares

Of their past labors and their irksome years;

That, unremembering of its former pain,

The soul may clothe itself with flesh again."

How the apostle applies this general tradition, or in what sense he may use it,
who can tell?

Revelation 20:5

The rest of the dead lived not again—It is generally supposed from these
passages that all who have been martyred for the truth of God shall be raised a
thousand years before the other dead, and reign on earth with Christ during that
time, after which the dead in general shall be raised; but this also is very
doubtful.

Revelation 20:6

Blessed—Ìáêáñéïò· Happy. And holy; he was holy, and therefore he
suffered for the testimony of Jesus in the time when nothing but holiness was
called to such a trial.

The first resurrection—Supposed to be that of the martyrs, mentioned above.

The second death—Punishment in the eternal world; such is the acceptation
of the phrase among the ancient Jews.

Hath no power—Ïõê å÷åé åîïõóéáí· Hath no authority—no dominion over
him. This is also a rabbinical mode of speech. In Erubin, fol. 19, 1; Chagiga, fol.
27, 1: "Res Lakish said, The fire of hell hath no power over an Israelite who sins.
Rab. Elieser says; The fire of hell hath no power over the disciples of the wise
men."

Revelation 20:7

Satan shall be loosed—How can this bear any kind of literal interpretation?
Satan is bound a thousand years, and the earth is in peace; righteousness
flourishes, and Jesus Christ alone reigns. This state of things may continue for
ever if the imprisonment of Satan be continued. Satan, however, is loosed at the
end of the thousand years, and goes out and deceives the nations, and peace is
banished from the face of the earth, and a most dreadful war takes place, etc., etc.
These can be only symbolical representations, utterly incapable of the sense
generally put upon them.

Revelation 20:8

Gog and Magog—This seems to be almost literally taken from the Jerusalem
Targum, and that of Jonathan ben Uzziel, on Numbers 11:26. I shall give the
words at length: "And there were two men left in the camp, the name of the one
was Eldad, the name of the other was Medad, and on them the spirit of prophecy
rested. Eldad prophesied and said, ‘Behold, Moses the prophet, the scribe of
Israel, shall be taken from this world; and Joshua the son of Nun, captain of the
host, shall succeed him.’ Medad prophesied and said, ‘Behold quails shall arise
out of the sea, and be a stumbling block to Israel.’ Then they both prophesied
together, and said, ‘In the very end of time Gog and Magog and their army shall
come up against Jerusalem, and they shall fall by the hand of the King Messiah;
and for seven whole years shall the children of Israel light their fires with the
wood of their warlike engines, and they shall not go to the wood nor cut down
any tree.’" In the Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziel, on the same place, the same
account is given; only the latter part, that is, the conjoint prophecy of Eldad and
Medad, is given more circumstantially, thus: "And they both prophesied together,
and said, ‘Behold, a king shall come up from the land of Magog in the last days,
and shall gather the kings together, and leaders clothed with armor, and all
people shall obey them; and they shall wage war in the land of Israel against the
children of the captivity, but the hour of lamentation has been long prepared for
them, for they shall be slain by the flame of fire which shall proceed from under
the throne of glory, and their dead carcasses shall fall on the mountains of the
land of Israel; and all the wild beasts of the field, and the wild fowl of heaven,
shall come and devour their carcasses; and afterwards all the dead of Israel shall
rise again to life, and shall enjoy the delights prepared for them from the
beginning, and shall receive the reward of their worlds.’"

This account seems most evidently to have been copied by St. John, but how
he intended it to be applied is a question too difficult to be solved by the skill of
man; yet both the account in the rabbins and in St. John is founded on Ezekiel,
Ezekiel 38:1-39:29. The rabbinical writings are full of accounts concerning Gog
and Magog, of which Wetstein has made a pretty large collection in his notes on
this place. Under these names the enemies of God’s truth are generally intended.

Revelation 20:9

The beloved city—Primarily, Jerusalem, typically, the Christian Church.

Revelation 20:10

And the devil—was cast onto the lake—Before Satan was bound, that is, his
power was curtailed and restrained; now, he is cast into the lake of fire, his power
being totally taken away.

Revelation 20:11

A great white throne—Refulgent with glorious majesty.

Him that sat on it—The indescribable Jehovah.

From whose face the earth and the heaven fled away—Even the brightness
of his countenance dissolved the universe, and annihilated the laws by which it
was governed. This is a very majestic figure, and finely expressed.

There was found no place for them—The glorious majesty of God filling all
things, and being all in all.

Revelation 20:12

The dead, small and great—All ranks, degrees, and conditions of men. This
description seems to refer to Daniel 7:9, 10.

And the books were opened—See Daniel 12:1. "Rab. Jehuda said: All the
actions of men, whether good or bad, are written in a book, and of all they shall
give account."—Sohar Gen., fol. 79, col. 298. "How careful should men be to
shun vice, and to act uprightly before the holy blessed God, seeing there are so
many which go throughout the earth, see the works of men, testify of them, and
write them in a book!"—Ibid., fol. 105, col. 417.

"In the first day of the new year the holy blessed God sits that
he may judge the world; and all men, without exception, give an
account of themselves; and the books of the living and the dead
are opened."

Sohar Chadash, fol. 19, 1.

The books mentioned here were the books of the living and the dead, or the
book of life and the book of death: that is, the account of the good and evil
actions of men; the former leading to life, the latter to death. St. John evidently
alludes here to Daniel 7:10, on which the rabbinical account of the books appears
to be founded. The expressions are figurative in both.

According to their works—And according to their faith also, for their works
would be the proof whether their faith were true or false; but faith exclusively
could be no rule in such a procedure.

Revelation 20:13

The sea gave up the dead—Those who had been drowned in it, and those
millions slain in naval contests, who had no other grave.

And death—All who died by any kind of disease. Death is here personified,
and represented as a keeper of defunct human beings; probably no more than
earth or the grave is meant, as properly belonging to the empire of death.

And hell—FÁéäçò, Hades, the place of separate spirits. The sea and death have
the bodies of all human beings; hades has their spirits. That they may be judged,
and punished or rewarded according to their works, their bodies and souls must
be reunited; hades, therefore, gives up the spirits; and the sea and the earth give
up the bodies.

Revelation 20:14

And death and hell were cast into the lake—Death himself is now abolished,
and the place for separate spirits no longer needful. All dead bodies and
separated souls being rejoined, and no more separation of bodies and souls by
death to take place, consequently the existence of these things is no farther
necessary.

This is the second death—The first death consisted in the separation of the
soul from the body for a season; the second death in the separation of body and
soul from God for ever. The first death is that from which there may be a
resurrection; the second death is that from which there can be no recovery. By
the first the body is destroyed during time; by the second, body and soul are
destroyed through eternity.

Revelation 20:15

Written in the book of life—Only those who had continued faithful unto
death were taken to heaven. All whose names were not found in the public
registers, who either were not citizens, or whose names had been erased from
those registers because of crimes against the state, could claim none of those
emoluments or privileges which belong to the citizens; so those who either did
not belong to the new and spiritual Jerusalem, or who had forfeited their rights
and privileges by sin, and had died in that state, were cast into the lake of fire.

THIS is the way in which God, at the day of judgment, will proceed with
sinners and apostates. Reader, see that thy name be written in the sacred register;
and, if written in, see that it never be blotted out.
