HOW PROUD I AM
Robert H. Gilbert, Jr.
April 10, 2002
It gets harder every day to raise children in this world we live in.
Trying to keep our children from drugs and alcohol is a chore in itself.
We try to teach them to respect others, have gratitude, and self motivation.
When they do something wrong why do we always blame ourselves?
How many times have we said, “I’m gonna beat you half to death if you
     don’t behave yourself”.
But all it takes is to see a tear fall from their eyes, then we are heart broken.
I wonder why kids think they know more that their parents?
Do we really act that dumb?
We are a lot older, but why is it they think they have been around the block
     more times than we have?
     Are we that lost?
We try to set an example that we would like for each of our children to follow.

We are a mentor from the day they are born.
We each have our own path to walk in life and to fulfill a dream that we have.
I completed my dream, which was to serve my country 22 years worth of my
life, and I would not take back one day of it.
I never tried to push my way of life on either of my sons.
But how little did I know that living a military life was not over.
Yesterday my youngest son called and said, “Dad I am going to follow in
your foot steps and carry the flag like you did for so long.
I asked if he was going to be in a parade or something?
He said, “ No Dad, I am going into the service”.
I am going to do what you did, and then maybe you will be proud of me.
Oh my, What a shock it was!
Lord, If he only knew how proud of him I really am.
