A few hours had passed when I felt as if someone was shaking me to wake me up. “I’m awake,” I muttered. “I’ll be up in a minute.” I must have fallen back asleep as once again I felt as if someone was shaking my shoulder for me to wake up. This time my eyes opened wide. Realizing that my back was to the curtains, I slowly looked to see if I could see anything on the walls. Not seeing anything that would represent anyone being there, I slowly turned over. My heart was thumping in my throat. Luckily for me, no one was there. Yet I slowly got up and got dressed. Peeking out through the curtain, I did not see anyone in the cab. So I put on my socks and boots. I looked at my side mirrors and could not see anyone around the truck. By this time, Mother Nature was calling. |

I got out of the truck slowly, looked under the truck, acting like a fool (chicken) I guess. Seeing nothing, I walked to the rest room. Coming out of the rest room, I decided to sit and smoke a cigarette and breathe the fresh morning air. While I was sitting there, another truck driver came over and said he liked the purple light in my truck. I told him I didn’t have a purple light in my truck. We looked at each other, and he walked over to my truck with me. (Now I was a chicken for sure.) As we got close to the truck, I could see the purple light. We looked at the lights in the rest area, but none were purple. We even looked to see if anything could cause a reflection. Nothing! |
I slowly went around and opened the driver’s door. The purple light disappeared. The driver said he thought I must have a haunted truck. I started the truck, we both wished the other a safe trip, and I left. I finally crossed the Texas line, and was glad to do so. Almost home! As I traveled along the highway, I said to myself, This highway can get mighty lonesome sometimes. Sometimes there were no cars or trucks for twenty to thirty miles. I finally gave in and turned the radio back on. But as I was doing this, out of the corner of my right eye I could see the purple light again. My arm was resting on the gear shift, and my hand was close to the emergency brake button. I unbuckled my seat belt and was getting ready to pull the buttons and jump out! |

As I was getting ready to do this, a hand laid itself on my arm. Now I was even more tempted. However, I felt a peace within me as this hand rested on my arm. I looked down at the hand, and I could see a big round scar as if the wound that caused it had only happened recently. I could see small blood spots on the hand. The hand turned its palm upward, and I could see the same type of scar. I slowly looked over to the passenger seat, and I could see the purple light go from the top of the back rest to the seat, to the floorboard of the truck. I did not realize it at the time, but what I was seeing was the purple robe. He wore a crown of thorns and a smile upon his face. As I looked back up at what appeared to be a face and head. I realized who was sitting there. |
I was thinking to myself that I was not ready to go just yet . . . but of course, I didn’t have a choice. He knew what I was thinking. “I’m not here to take you. I heard you say earlier that this was a lonesome highway. I came here before you to let you know that you are never alone.” As he spoke, a bright light appeared out in front of my truck. I reached out to touch him, and the purple light slowly faded away. However, I could still hear him saying, “You are never alone. Remember, I’ll see you someday.” |
