Over the past few weeks I have asked my fellow students at CMC what they know about their student government. The answers I received did not make me feel positively towards our student government.
Typical answers were:
"Where and when does the Senate meet?"
"Does anyone know where and when the Executive Board meets?"
"I don't know what goes on with the Executive Board or the Senate."
I've come to the conclusion that far too few students actually know how their student government is run, and that it's not the students' fault.
Rather than place blame on anyone or any group, I will work to remedy the situation. I will work to educate you about the government that handles your money and deals with your college experience.
I don't want your student government to be a mystery to you. I don't want it to be an elite, esoteric club.
I want you to know what is going on, and I want you to be able to participate in your student government. I understand that you have a busy schedule, so I want to make participation easy for you. I want to give you easy access to knowledge of your student government.
As ASCMC Vice President, I promise to write a column that details the proceedings of the ASCMC Senate and the ASCMC Executive Board meetings. I will publish the column weekly in claremontmckenna.com and in each issue of the Forum. I will inform you about important issues and events, such as the yearbook budget problems and Student Senate meetings.
I will enable you to check the activities of your representatives in ASCMC because I will provide you with readily available information on their actions and decisions.
You will, therefore, have a much greater opportunity to have your voice heard and affect change.
