As I have said before, I place a great deal of trust in you, the students of CMC. I place trust in your intelligence and your ability to make wise decisions. I would like, therefore, to place a ballot in your hand that allows you to vote on issues that concern CMC students, but might not normally be put to a vote.
My proposal is to schedule one or two votes per year on up to three initiative or referendum items for CMC. Issues could range from keeping our current dining caterer to proposed alterations to North Quad dorms. Issues would be placed on the ballot either if a set number of signatures from students who support a vote on the issue is collected or if a set majority of the Student Senate votes to put the issue before the student body. The student body could then vote (most likely towards the end of first semester, and at balloting time for ASCMC elections second semester).
While these votes may not directly affect a change in the way some things are done, they may give concrete evidence of the students' opinions to the Administration and faculty at CMC. Thus, they may affect change indirectly. Also, initiative and referendum is yet another way for you to have your voice heard and get involved in the way CMC is run. |
