Title: Behind the Scenes: First Night
Author: Elizabeth L. Iacono
Rating: PG
Category: Story, Romance
Keywords: Pre-XF, Mulder/Scully Romance
Spoilers: Travelers, Unusual Suspects
Summary: Mulder and Scully finally admit their feelings
for each other, but the situation isn't what
         you'd expect.

This is an idea stemming from my desire to read a
Mulder and Scully married and with kids story. We
all know though that Scully can't have kids anymore
by natural means. If you wanted that to happen you
had to go back before her abduction. Which is how
this formed. It's what I call a semi-alternate, or
behind the scenes universe. That means that while
the past events in Mulder and Scully's lives are
different from what we can tell on the show, the
time when they're on the X-Files is almost exactly
as it appears, with the exception of a few episodes,
(namely 3, The Field where I Died [They're soulmates,
no questions about that], and Never Again) and some
little scenes scattered throughout the series. Here,
they met in 1986, and started dating in 1990, which
is what this story is about.

And to all shippers, don't worry about the Travelers
Spoiler. This is a Mulder Scully Romance all the
way. There will be a companion story to this called
Behind the Scenes.

Archive-Sure, just e-mail me to tell me where it
is. I already sent it to Gossamer.

Feedback: Please! I want to hear what people think
of this idea. My address is RhiaRamsay@aol.com

Disclaimer: They're not mine. Why go into denial?
That's Mulder and Scully's job when it comes to
their relationship.

Behind The Scenes: First Night

Late November, 1990
Fox Mulder's apartment

"Are you sure it's okay for me to be here?"
Dana Scully asked as she sat down on Fox Mulder's couch.

"Yeah," Mulder called out from the kitchen.
"She's at a workshop in San Francisco that's scheduled
to take about a month. And she just left last week."
The 'she' Mulder was referring to was Mulder's wife, or
soon to be ex-wife, Diana Fowley. Their short marriage
was now officially down the pipes and Mulder had an
appointment with a lawyer the next week to obtain
divorce papers. Of course he didn't tell Scully that
yet. He was trying to figure out something more
important, how to tell Scully that he was in love
with her, and that he never really loved Diana.

Mulder walked out of the kitchen carrying a bowl
full of popcorn. He sat down on couch next to Scully,
propping his feet up on the coffee table. "So don't worry."

Scully slouched next to him, their arms rubbing,
and both silently pretending that they didn't feel
anything when that happened. "She hates me, and she'd
have a fit if she knew I was here, making you spend
too much time with your friends and not enough time
with her."

Mulder raised an eyebrow in an attempt to imitate
what he called 'Scully's skeptical look', which she
usually got when he began talking about aliens and
the like. "You hate her too," he said with a slight grin.

"I just thought she was trying to be a little too
controlling over your life," she said airily. She
ignored the little voice in the back of her head
saying that she was really jealous of her, because
she was the one with Mulder and not her. "Besides, you
hated my ex-boyfriend anyway too," she said, aiming a
pointed look at him.

He laughed out loud, tossing his head back.
"Well, I don't think that'll be too much of a problem
anymore. If she comes here more than once a week it's
a rare occasion."

Scully looked over at his left hand with an
unnoticed gleam in her eyes. "Yeah, I noticed you
stopped wearing your ring."

"It was leaving green marks on my finger anyway,"
he grinned. Scully cuffed him in the arm.

     "You're incorrigible, Mulder!" she laughed.
Mulder moved away from her fist. As he did, though,
his feet kicked some papers off the table. Scully
bent down to pick them up, and moaned when she saw
what they were. "Aww, Mulder," she whined, "You
said no work tonight. It's bad horror movie night."

Mulder pulled the file from her hands, and he
recognized what it was. "This isn't really
work. It's personal business. It's one of those
X-Files I told you about. I went to visit the agent
that investigated it, an Arthur Dales. Found out that
the government has been hiding stuff all the way back then."

Scully turned the skeptical look on him. "Come
on, government conspiracies?"

He shrugged. "I told you about those guys I met
at that conference in Baltimore last year. They've
got proof. And they're even worse than I am."

She sighed and leaned back against the couch.
"Whatever. Let's just watch the movie. I've never
seen the original version of 'The Fly'."

"Well, you don't know what you're missing."

By the time the movie was over, the popcorn
was gone, Scully's head was beginning to fall on
Mulder's shoulder and his arm had made its way
around Scully's shoulders. Both were thinking
about how right it felt to be like that.

Mulder looked down at Scully's head. He was
head over heels in love with her, he'd finally
admitted it to himself after four long years of
believing that they were 'just friends'. He was
dying to know if she felt the same way, though.
Sometimes he felt that she was staring at him in
a predatory way, like she wanted to attack him.
Or jump his bones. And sometimes she seemed overly
protective of him, especially when he was speaking
about something that Diana or any other ex had done
to hurt him.

Suddenly she lifted her head off his shoulder
and looked him in the eyes. Once more they felt
that electricity that was always there ever since
they met but pushed down. As a mutual decision
their heads moved closer to each other, eyes
fluttering shut. Their lips brushed each other
gently before meeting in a passionate kiss, their
first one that they didn't pretend never happened,
unlike the one under the mistletoe at Christmas.
When they pulled apart Scully whispered
close against his lips "Is this right?"

"Yeah. Oh yeah," Mulder whispered breathlessly.

"Yeah," Scully agreed and leaned in to kiss him again.

The Next Morning

Scully opened her eyes slowly and stretched out.
She stared around the unfamiliar room until the night
before finally came back to her. And she grinned.

She and Mulder finally kissed and took that
final step. Somehow they made it into the bedroom,
and she didn't regret one bit of it. It was right,
this was what was meant to be ever since they first
met but didn't realize it. She looked over at him,
sleeping peacefully on his stomach, the waist band
of his boxers peeking out over the top of the sheet
covering his legs. She herself was attired in one
of his old dress shirts that Mulder insisted looked
better on her than it did on him.

Then, it hit her. She slept with a married man.
It was a cardinal sin. Even though she wasn't
particularly religious, it was still wrong. Mulder
was officially married to Diana, even though they both
knew he didn't ever love her. She knew that he was in
love with her, he'd said so so many times the night
before, and she'd said the same. But it was still wrong.

Scully sat upright in bed, the sheets falling
around her waist, and buried her head in her hands.
With her sudden moves Mulder finally awoke. He
rolled onto his back and sleepily smiled up at her.
Then, he registered that something was wrong, and he
sat up behind her and rubbed her shoulders through
the thin dress shirt. "What is it?" he asked.

Her head still buried in her hands, she muttered
"I can't believe it."

"Can't believe what?" Mulder asked, leaning his
head down next to hers.

He lifted her head from her hands and stared him
straight in the eye. "I just slept with a married man.
That's a crime that people are executed for in some
countries!"

Mulder's head didn't get it until he realized
that she was talking about him. In all honesty he'd
even forgotten that he was supposedly married to
someone else. He wouldn't be married much longer
as soon as he visited the lawyer. And he knew that
he was in love with one Dana Scully. He leaned in
and pressed a kiss to her cheek. "Did last night
feel right to you?" he asked.

"Yeah," Scully said, a little shaky.

"Do you love me?" was his next question.

She whipped her head around to look him straight
in the eye. "You know I do," she said insistently.

Mulder leaned forward slightly and kissed her
lightly. "Then don't worry. Everything will be
fine." He decided then to tell her about the
appointment with the lawyer next week, but that
at that moment there was a knock on the door.
Mulder closed his eyes and leaned his forehead
against hers. "Ignore it," he muttered. The knock
became louder and more insistent.

"You better get that," Scully said. "It could
be important."

Mulder rolled out of bed and pulled a t-shirt
on over his boxers. He leaned back over the bed and
gave her a kiss. "I'll be right back," he said, and
walked out of the room.

He opened the door to find an courier there,
dressed in a Federal Express uniform. "I've got
papers for a Mr. Fox Mulder," the courier said,
looking down at the name and address on the plain
manila envelope.

     "Yeah, that's me," Mulder said.

"Sign here, please," The courier said, holding
out a clipboard. Mulder signed it and the courier
handed over the envelope. "Have a nice day," he
said, and walked down the hall to the elevator.

Mulder opened the envelope and slid the papers
out. He stared at them for a few seconds, then his
face broke out into a grin. He walked back into the
bedroom and saw Scully sitting up against the
headboard, playing with the comforter. "Hey," he
said, and she looked up at him. "I got an early
Christmas present." He tossed the envelope on the
bed, himself following and sliding in next to Scully.

She picked up the envelope and looked at it.
"It's addressed to you," she cocked an eyebrow at him.

He waved a hand at it. "Open it!"

She opened the envelope and pulled the papers
out. When she finished reading them she threw her
head back and laughed. "Only you would be happy to
get divorce papers."

Mulder wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled
her to rest against him. "This means that little thing
you were worrying about before isn't a problem anymore.
It's fate." He pressed a kiss against her cheek.

Scully leaned back in his arms. "Fate? Mulder,
you're nuts," she smiled.

He rested his chin on her shoulder and looked up
at her, reminding her of a puppy she had when she was
younger. "Yeah, but you love me anyway."

She kissed his forehead. "That I do."

And it was the beginning of a wonderful relationship .

I know this piece was pure sugary fluff, and probably
not how they would get together now, but this is way
before the X-Files and all the stuff that goes along
with it. It's allowed to be sappy.

There will be another piece coming soon called
'Behind the Scenes' which shows where this
relationship is in 1999. And it's still very
shippy and sappy, so if you want angst, don't
look here.
