Information
The year was 1914. The month was November. The day was Tuesday the 3rd; Election Day in Philadelphia and across the nation. The world around us was engulfed in what became known as World War I -- or "the war to end all wars". In Philadelphia, homelessness was a major problem even then. In the midst of all these events and circumstances, RHO Chapter was founded on the campus of Temple University. It became the sixteenth chapter of ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC., the oldest Black Collegiate Greek letter organization (founded on the campus of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York on December 4, 1906).
At one time in history RHO Chapter initiated both college and alumni men into its ranks. As it developed into a purely alumni chapter, RHO has remained distinguished from all other alumni chapters in Alpha Phi Alpha by not having to use the 'lambda" designation in its name.
RHO Chapter embraced the national programs of this great Fraternity. "Go to High School-Go to College" and "A Voteless People is a Hopeless People" were early rallying calls of the Fraternity and RHO Chapter. The RHO Chapter Education Foundation was established to further assist the Chapter in Scholarship giving. Voter registration, tutoring, mentoring, support of Big Brothers, scouting, the March of Dimes program for teenage boys, job training and career development are just some of the activities which benefited from the support of RHO Chapter. These programs remain active today.
The leadership of Mighty RHO Chapter has been entrusted to twelve Brothers who have taken this Chapter from its humble beginnings to its respected position in the Philadelphia community and throughout the Fraternity. Past Presidents of RHO Chapter include: *Dr. Kirksey L. Curd, *Dr. Walter F. Jerrick, *Dr. Larney E. Hardy, *Dr. J. Otis Smith, Sr., *Dr. R. Allen Durrant, *Walter L. Gordon, *Dr. William Ross, Jr., Dr. Thomas H Watkins, Sr., *Dr. Harold D. Trawick, *Russell P. Daniel, Jr., and James G. Slaughter. The current and Twelfth President of RHO Chapter is Kevin Douglas Lamb.
