Image Resources:  The Story Of Architecture, by Jonathan Glancey, and Febland Group Furniture
Baroque interiors contain extravagant, decorative elements meant to startle, inspire and flaunt one’s wealth and power.  The word Baroque became known as “highly ornamental”, and is often used to describe very elaborate ornamentation.  Massive and ornate furniture, luxurious textiles, royal colors, sparkling accessories, dramatic floors and extravagant wall treatments were used heavily during this development, immediately following the High Renaissance.  Illusion and perspective were key elements of this style, used to add a sense of movement and activity to a room.  Baroque architects mastered the unification of paintings, sculpture, architecture and garden design in order to produce remarkable buildings of grandeur, intended to overwhelm one’s senses and emotions.
