Although covered by protective finishes against fire and weathering, metals can be very decorative. Cast iron and wrought iron are very strong and often used on functional items for decorative purposes. Metals can be used as duct and grill covers, floors, walls, ceilings, staircases, panels, fireplaces, door surrounds, light fixtures, furniture trimmings, etc. Metals have metallic, reflective finishes and can be in the forms of smooth sheets, etched, beaten, embossed, polished or emamelled. Other finishes include grinding, scratching, sand-blasting, and electrochemical and anodized treatments. The main metals used in interiors are: |
Copper |
This material is rich in appearance and non-magnetic. It is reddish-brown and bright when polished, but has a protective green patina when tarnished. Copper can be welded, brazed, and soldered. It can act as an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It is often cast, drawn, extruded, spun, hammered, punched and wooven. It can be used as flame-resistant vents, grills and screens, counter facings, light fixtures and edgings. |
This material is mostly made up of a mixture of copper and zinc. Its color is dependent upon the proportions of the two, which can range from a very light yellow to a dark golden color. Brass is easy to work and does resist corrosion. Joining methods include brazing, welding and soldering. When polished, brass gives off a bright, attractive sheen. It can be used on decorative doors and windows, and as couter and furniture fixtures and trim. |
This material is similar to brass, but has a much darker, redder color. It is expensive and more difficult to work. It is dense and hard, and also corrosion resistant. Bronze can be rolled, extruded, forged and cast. It can be used for tiles, plaques, screens, grills and sculptures. |
This material is soft and non-magnetic. It has a silvery color and is easy to work. It can be extruded, pressed, forged, drawn, moulded, stamped, bent, hot and cold-rolled and shaped. Joining methods include brazing, welding, rivetting, soldering and joining with adhesives. Aluminium can be used on grills, balustrades, railing, windows, doors, mesh, screens, panels, tiles, blinds, shutters and duct cover. |
This material is primarily a fire-proofing element. Although it is indeed a metal, but is used as an ingrediant for paints and enamels. |
This material is the most commonly used metal in interiors. It is non-magnetic, oxidation-resistant and water-resistant. It can produce a very sparkling finish. Chrome can be cast and hot-forged, and can be used on small appliances, trim, furniture, framing, counters, detailing and bathroom and light fixtures. |
This material is limited in interior work because of its price. Its color varies from white, yellow and a reddish blue color. Gold is resistant to corrosion. It is very malleable and can be rolled, drawn, spun, hammered and cast. Joining methods include welding and soldering. It is mostly used as decorative details on fixtures. |
This material is easy to work, resistant to oxidation and conducts heat easily. It can be rolled, extruded, spun, bent, drawn and hammered. Joining methods include welding and brazing. |
This material is silvery in color and resistant to corrosion. It can be hot and cold-rolled, bent, forged, extruded, spun and punched. Joining methods include oxyacetylene, brazing and soldering. A protective coating is given to nickel by electroplating. This has a limited color range and can be finished in a matt, satin or bright polish. |
This is actually a group of steels, not just one in particular. This term has come to mean a smooth, gleaming material with a very appealing performance and appearance. It is easily manufactured and strong. It can be cast, rolled, drawn, forged, bent and formed. Generally, joining methods are rivetting and welding. Stainless steel comes in a varity of forms such as sheets, strips, plates, bars and square sections. It can be used on appliances, walls, doors, screens, trimmings, grills, louvres and counter tops. |
