Renaissance interiors show strong concern for symmetry and lavish decorations. Ceilings were usually, beamed or coffered, and painted in rich colors.  Floors in larger spaces were, typically, tiled in geometric patterns and squares.  Materials, such as marble, terrazzo (tiny chips of marble embedded in cement and sanded smooth) and brick were, often, used on floors.  Walls, as a general rule, were, either smooth and in a simple neutral color, or painted in patterns and murals, called fresco paintings.  Fireplaces were adorned with ornamental mantels, carved with sculptural details.  Doorways and window frames were, also, decorated with rich detail. Decorative moldings and trim reflect Roman influences.  Draperies of large woven patterns of silk in strong colors were, often, displayed.  Velvets and damasks stood, as favorites, in early Renaissance times.
