Solidified molten material. Granite, most common, gets its color by the amount of certain ingredients it contains. These colors can range from dark or green to warmer tones of pink, buff, red, brown, grey and white. Granite is very hard and is ideal for kitchens. It will withstand wear from spills, knife marks and also heat, with very little maintenance. It will not tolerate high temperatures, though, and therefore cannot be used as a fire-resisting material. |
This is the most commonly used type of stone. It is formed by continuous deposits of tiny particles of silt that wash down stream from rivers and lakes. Limestone, most common, has various types. Its colors are also determined by the amount of certain ingredients it contains. Iron oxides produce a reddish, yellowish tinge, and organic peat produces a very dark hue. Limestone can be used as interior finishes (with the proper precautions and specifications), kitchens, and dining areas (with proper sealants applied), and floors. Travertine and Mexican Onyx are more decorative forms of sedimentary stone. Sandstone is hard, fine-grained and most often used in exterior work. This material is resistent to high temperatures and therefore, used extensively in hearth and fireplace design. It's non-slip surface makes it ideal for places that will acquire large amounts of water. It is acid-resistant and contains external ageing properties that make it ideal for patios and swimming pools. Sandstone and Limestone should not be mixed, because they contain different properties of resistance to different types of pollution, which could be detrimental. |
Is a combination of igneous and sedimentary stone. It is produced by natural pressures of the stones, or by heat or moisture. Marble is a typical example of this type of stone. This material can be repaired and maintained by an annual spray of cellulose acetate or plastic lacquer. Marble can be found all over the world in a wide variety of colors, such as black, black/white, buff/brown, red/brown, rose and white. It can be processed to have various textures and different shapes and sizes. It can be used as veneers, inlays and crushed and broken for murals and mosaics. Slate is highly used in residental interiors. This material can not tolerate high temperatures, but can withstand damp conditions. Many colors, such as grey, blue, purple, red and green, are available. Slate can be used on walls, floors, furniture and trimmings. |
