Rich Begel at Anastasia State Park, FL, May 1, 2006I am the Principal Trombonist with the Springfield Symphony, Second Trombonist with the Dayton Philharmonic, and the Low Brass Instructor at Earlham College, Central State University, McCutcheon Music, and at my home, where I teach privately. I am also an author and an editor.

I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Performance from the Crane School of Music at The State University of New York at Potsdam and a Master of Music degree in Performance from New England Conservatory. I later did doctoral work at Michigan State University. I studied most extensively with Dr. Mark Hartman, Norman Bolter, and Curtis Olson, and I have also studied with many other great musicians throughout the country.

I have performed as a substitute with the Summit Brass, Cincinnati Symphony, Cincinnati Opera, Columbus Symphony, Richmond Symphony (IN), Dayton Philharmonic Concert Band, the Tom Daugherty Orchestra (jazz/OH), South Bend Symphony (IN), Kalamazoo Symphony (MI), Lansing Symphony (MI), Alabama Symphony, Traverse City Symphony (MI), Boston Ballet Orchestra, New Hampshire Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Nashua Symphony (NH), Springfield Symphony (MA), Albany Symphony (NY), Hudson Valley Philharmonic (NY), Indian Hill Symphony (MA), and the Virginia Symphony.

I am a former member of the Northwest Indiana Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Spoleto Festival U.S.A. (SC), Festival of Two Worlds (Italy), National Repertory Orchestra (CO), Tanglewood Festival Orchestra (MA), Pine Mountain Music Festival (MI), Three Rivers Wind Symphony (IN), West Shore Symphony (MI), Pontiac-Oakland Symphony (MI), Midland Symphony (MI), Musique 21 (MI), Beaumont Brass (MI), Hingham Symphony (MA), New Bedford Symphony (MA), Symphony by the Sea (MA), Concord Symphony (MA), Boston Civic Symphony, Boston Microtonal Society, Auros Group for New Music (MA), Boston Chamber Ensemble, Boston Brass Guild, Frank Shooshan’s 16 Piece Big Band (MA), Sonny Daniels Big Band (NY), and the Hicksville Community Swing Band (NY).

My prior college teaching experience includes low-brass at Hillsdale College (MI), Alma College (MI), and Olivet College (MI), ensemble coaching at Wheaton College (MA), ear-training for the University of Massachusetts, low brass and methods classes at Michigan State University as a Graduate Assistant, and the Trombone Instructor Position (lessons, methods classes, coaching, performing) at the Crane School of Music as a sabbatical replacement for a semester. I have also taught at the Pine Mountain Music Festival (MI), the Park City International Chamber Music Festival (UT), and in the summer of 2008 I had the pleasure of teaching a class at the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute (CO). After I finished my Master’s Degree in Boston, I taught K-4 general music in Rhode Island and Boston, and was the Elementary Brass Instructor and the 8th Grade Orchestra Instructor in Winchester, MA.
