The
Revolutionary War was a major event that had many affects that benefited the
Colonist of America. The war was fought
by the British and the Colonist and took place within the thirteen colonies of
America. It was a bloody battle that
left many dead, and just as many wounded.
The colonies surprised the British by overcoming them and winning the
war. They achieved many task in this
victory, one such as Representation in Parliament, and they also became
separated from the British Government to obtain their on Government. They voted a leader, known as President
George Washington, in to head the thirteen colonies. Simply rebelling against the British and their soldiers that were
placed in the Colonist’s territories caused the Revolutionary War, which led to
the benefits that the colonist achieved.
The
colonist became very angered at the way they were being treated by the British
government. They were being pushed
around, taxed, and all sorts of different events such as this that made them
unhappy. They were taxed on various
objects such as, currency, stamps, sugar, and tea just to name a few. According to the text book Nations of
Nations written by several authors such as, James Davidson, William
Gienapp, Christine Heyrman, Mark Lytle, and Michael Stoff, “It followed from
this close connection between property, power, and liberty that no people
should be taxed without their consent or that of their elected
representatives. The power to tax was
the power to destroy by depriving a person of property. Yet both the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act were
taxes passed by members of Parliament, none of whom had been elected by
colonials”.(152) They refused these
acts and rebelled against paying them by sneaking items in without letting the
British know. The British even put an
import tax on the colonist on items coming in and out of the American
ports. The British just bullied the
colonist around until the colonist got tired of being treated the way they did
and decided to retaliate. The colonist
secretly formed a militia to go against the British Army. This was a big cause of the Revolutionary
War.
The
Revolutionary War grew from many aspects unknown to many people today. One of these aspects was the French and
Indian War. According to a book written
by Albert Martin entitled The War for Independence, “The American
Revolution grew from the seeds of another conflict, the French and Indian
War”.(7) This war helped the colonist
realize that they could defend their honor by standing up to the British. This is why they chose to rebel against the
British and stand up for what they believed in, which was equal
opportunity. The only thing the
colonist wanted was representation in parliament since they had to pay taxes
for different items to the British that they viewed as unfair. This war
triggered the colonist into becoming independent and fight for what they
believed in.
The colonists were becoming very upset and
rebellious at this point, they were sick and tired of being treated this way by
the British Parliament and soldiers.
The colonists were so tired of being treated this way that they started
standing up to the soldiers personally, and getting in arguments and fist
fights. In fact, according to the book
written by John Bowman called The Revolutionary War “On the cold and
damp evening of March 5, 1770, a group of Boston harbor toughs began to throw
snowballs at a lone British guard in front of the State House. A large crowd of men and boys began to join
in, tormenting, shoving, yelling and throwing stones. As the mob grew out of control, Captain Thomas Preston called out
a small unit of his guard to face the several hundred gathered. Somehow, in the desperation of the moment, a
shot was fired by one of the cornered soldiers, followed by another”.(19) This was known as the Boston Massacre and
aided in triggering the Revolutionary War.
The news of this tragic event spread throughout the colonies and the
tension of the colonist grew severely fierce.
They were really upset and wanted to get back at the British. So the plot of the Boston Tea Party was
thought up.
After
the word of the Boston Massacre spread throughout the colonies, the plan for
the Boston Tea Party was thought up.
According to the book The Revolutionary War “On the cold night of
December 16, 1773, about 100 men disguised as Mohawk Indians and
African-Americans crept onto the ships’ decks and hauled 342 tea chests from
their holds. They acted in silence and
secrecy, often not even knowing each other’s identity. These Sons of Liberty threw the chests into
the harbor, one by one, and then themselves disappeared into the darkness as
the chests floated off on the tide”.(23)
Other colonies got word of this and began to do the same thing, some
storing it in warehouses. After a few
years the tea was sold to raise money to fund the American Army. King George III was offended by the
rebellious acts of the colonists, so he then closed the ports to the Boston
harbor. Word spread to the other
colonies and they began to aid the Bostonians, they sent them, food, cattle,
and other objects that would aide the Bostonians. This was the beginning of the uniting of the thirteen colonies to
stand up against the fleet of British soldiers.
