OMETEPE | |||||||||||||||||||

We went to Ometepe on Valentine's Day weekend and had a blast. Ometepe is the biggest island in the world that is located in a sweetwater lake. The island consists of two volcanoes forming a figure 8. | |||||||||||||||||||

Getting to Ometepe was half the work and half the fun... and all of the seasickness. Not really, but the trip did involve an hour or so car ride from Managua, followed by an hour long boat ride on Lake Nicaragua--the largest lake in Central America. After finding a taxi it took another 45 minutes or so to get to our hotel. The next day we woke up with plans of conquering one of the two volcanoes on the island. We knew it was going to be an 8 hour or so hike but little did we know that it would involve lots of mud! At the top of the volcano there was a lagoon. The pictures below show the forest at the bottom, the lagoon, and the view of Lake Nicaragua. But it was worth it. We will soon have a page called Ometepe 2 as we are planning our next trip! |
