Once he was a career soldier, though it’s not clear when and why did he join the Army. The book suggests that got recruited as soon as he grew up, got an excellent elite training. Soon he learned the truth behind the Company and deserted. His criminal record was made up after his escape. . He fought in the Wailing Wars, and is suspected to kill 500 Mercs, his entire platoon. The TCoR Toombs log says his murder count is uncountable, and he has the biggest bounty ever recorded by the Merc Guild on his head.
As a trained soldier, he is able to pilot spaceships and is skilled with many firearms, but his weapon of choice is a handmade knife nicknamed in prisons as shiv. Riddick's shivs are multifunctional; the range spreads from 'a personal grooming appliance' to the lethal cut. Riddick is a well-built, strong and muscular man; he is also very flexible and can fully rotate his cuffed arms. Dislocating his broad shoulders to escape.
As a person, Riddick has a good sense of humor; he spots sarcastic one-liners all the time. He is very smart and intelligent; oozes sexual presence, yet his social skills are not yet developed. He is labeled as a sociopath, but I guess he is not sick mentally, "just" not use to being around people.
All we known that he is a convicted killer, but his original crime is not revealed. Either way his first record was set up by the company (book scenario), or he made his own record by himself, he is responsible for the death of many Mercs, prison inmates and prison guards. Riddick has no qualms to kill everybody that steps between him and his freedom.
Riddick spent most of his adult life locked away. The website lists 4 prisons, which means at least 4 successful escape stints. It matches the upcoming TCoR game that labels Riddick as talented escape artist. Riddick's eye operation is both in the movie, the TCoR game and the PB website comics. The operation made by a fellow convict for 20 Mental Cools allows Riddick an enhanced viewing mode. The TCoR Toombs file notes only .2% of recipients survive the procedure and only .005% of recipients recover vision.
Riddick can see in the dark with his purple colored vision, but he has to wear black goggles to bear with the natural lights. His eyes, once his strength in the underground prison, are his biggest weakness in the free world. He's captured by long time nemesis body hunter William Johns and loaded to the board of the Hunter-Gratzner. The commercial ship wrecks on a seemingly dead planet and overcoming all odds, Riddick saves his fellow survivors - well, the lucky ones who are not eaten by the native hammerhead monsters.
