Final Fantasy 1 is my favourite NES game. I can remember when my older brother bought this game. He was so hyped about getting this. At the time he bought it, it was still being sold on store shelves, so this must have been in 90 or 91...I can't remember precisely the date. As soon as he brought it home he was instantly addicted. I was probably 6 at the time, so I wasn't really old enough for my brother to trust me playing it, so I would watch my brother play this game for hours on end. I can still remember his choice of character names for the most part, Black Mage=Gus, White Mage=Carl, Red Mage=Red and I can't remember the fighter's name, but I know that was his 4th party member. I still use "Red" and "Gus" for my party member names. I finally got the game for 14 bucks in a BI-WAY when I was 11 or 12. The game did not come with a box or a map (so if I can beat the game without a map when I was 11 or 12, you can too!). I've played the game ever since. Most of the walkthrough below is based on the actual walkthrough I put together when I first bought the game. You should try and beat the game without the aid of this page, but I'd recommend comming back here after the game to see if you missed something. The first thing you want to do in this game is to
compose a well-balanced group of warriors. For the sake of this walkthrough I
have selected: Fighter, Black Belt, White Mage and a Black Mage. After
selecting and naming a group of individuals, you will find yourself outside Coneria. When you enter the city and talk to people you
will soon realize that a princess is in distress. You will now want go to the
castle and talk around there. You will soon realize that a princess is in
distress and is held captive by Garland in a castle to the northwest of Coneria. Don’t go there just yet, cause
you have no armor, weapons or magic…you’ll be slaughtered. So purchase armor,
weapons and magic for your warriors. I selected the chain mail and rapier for
the fighter, the wooden mail and wooden chain for the black belt, the magic
“CURE”, iron hammer and cloth for the white mage and the magic “FIRE”, the
wooden cane and cloth for the black mage. Equip whatever weapons you have
chosen to purchase for your warriors. You might notice that some of the weapons
may not be equip able by characters. For instance, the rapier cannot be
equipped by the black or white mage. I have added weapon charts for characters,
so that’s not a problem. On you go…but not just yet. I have played this game
several times and have only once defeated Garland without ever returning to the
INN in Coneria. I strongly suggest picking up 1-2
levels before you decide to enter Garland’s castle. Now…you are at L3 (level 3) for all characters and you
have enough money to get two more magic for your mages. I chose all the magic
but LOCK and RUSE, cause they suck! I have yet to see
LOCK actually work. Anyways off to the wizard of Oz! Go north and you’ll see a
run down castle, could this be the location of Garland? Yep. Enter the castle.
Head north until you reach Garland. Talk to him. You automatically enter a
fight scene. Kick his ass and then talk to the princess (chick just north of
where Garland was). You automatically appear in the castle as soon as you
defeat Garland (and that’s a good thing too if he decided to use some instant
death spells on you). Talk to the king first. He tells you he has constructed a
bridge for you. Then talk to the princess, she gives you a special item: the
lute, for rescuing her. Now you can head straight for the bridge, or you can do
something optional. Go back to Garland’s Castle. In the northwest and southwest
rooms there are items for your taking. That’s right, in the northwest room
enjoy a CABIN and HEAL and in the southwest room enjoy a CAP, which can be
equipped by your fighter (or other characters). Refer to my item list for full
item counts for areas. Now it’s time to head to the bridge. The new bridge is
north of Coneria. You step on the bridge and it takes
you to another screen, which is very boring…I always hated that part. Go east to
Provoka. It may be hard to get to Pravoka.
Use the map (hold B then press SELECT) to navigate. Once inside Pravoka head to the west end of town and talk to Bikke the Pirate. You’ll enter a fight scene and then you
have to fight some pirates. Once defeated, talk to Bikke
again to receive the SHIP. The first thing you want to do is to go to Elfland. Upon conversing with the elves you will soon
realize that you have to undo the king’s curse. Go north to an old “Spooky”
castle and meet up with a man who tells you that Astos
has double-crossed him. He instructs you to recover the CROWN from the southern
cave, the cave of Marsh. I wouldn’t attempt this right now. It is extremely
dangerous. I would build up my attributes (level) and acquire stronger
weapons/armor/magic spells. So you talk to the guy, who I’m telling you something
is up with…I mean the dude lives in an old castle with some bats…he’s not
hiding out, is he? Yep. You talk to him and he is ASTOS. He has MAYTOYA’S
CRYSTAL and wants your CROWN…why can’t we trade? Cause that’s no fun…now is it?
Now watch out cause I guarantee you that he’ll try RUB-ing
you. RUB is a magic you will gain later in the game, for now, just know, that
if he casts it and it works…good by for you. Right off the bat I’d cast MUTE
and silence his magic capabilities, but do as you will. Defeat him. Get the CRYSTAL and head to MAYTOYA’S cave. Do you talk to Matoya and
she gives you the HERB, which you can use to revive the Prince of Elfland. Loot her cave when you are at it, you get 2 heals
and a pure. Now it’s off to the Elfland castle. Go to the prince’s room and talk to the servant. He
will use the HERB and revive the prince. The prince will give you the MYSTIC
KEY. Open the treasure chests in the northeast section of the castle and get
the Silver Hammer, Copper Guantlet and some GP. Now
go to Coneria Castle and open some chests there. Go and get: Silver Dagger, Sabre,
Iron Cane, Iron Mail, TNT and the Iron Shield. Now head north to Garland’s
Castle. In the northeast corner there is a: Were Sword and
Soft and in the southeast corner there is a: Rune Sword. Those treasures are
guarded by gargoyles. Head to the spooky castle. Enter the spooky castle, find the treasure room and
the set up is sort of like this: CHEST CHEST Mummy/Power Cane Mummy/Iron
Gauntlet CHEST Image/Falchon NOTE: MONSTER/TREASURE Harm 2 or Fire 2 will mash these monsters up real
quick. Now go to the Cave of Marsh. Go to B3 and recover from the south rooms (from left
to right): Silver Bracelet Silver
Dagger EMPTY 1020g WIZARD WIZARD WIZARD Now head to the Dwarves’ Cave… Go to the west end of the Dwarves’ Cave. Go south down
a passage till you reach a room. On the southern side of the room is Nerrick. Talk to Nerrick and he
builds a canal. Go in the room and get all the treasures. Now its time to go
sailing! Head south from the cave. Notice something? A
canal has been made. Go and grab your ship and go west to Melmond.
Walk around Melmond and you
will soon realize that the town had been invaded with Vampires. You will also
learn that the main vampire is hanging out in the Earth Cave. That’s where we
will be heading right now. The Earth Cave is just south (following the sea) of Melmond. Once you get inside, get the treasures on that
level. It may take a few attempts to get all the treasures on the first level,
since they are guarded with very strong “earth” creatures. I have only one
suggestion for you. Go in the left leg of the first level. You’ll hit an enemy
it’s a giant and iguana…or just giant. Am I right? This is a special hall. Do
not go down! You will get stuck since every block to the south is a monster
block. YOU WILL CERTAINLY DIE! Instead, move left until you hit a “monster
block”, then move right and move back. You’ll keep fighting the very strong
giants and iguanas that give you between 1000-2000g every battle and 500+
experience points and you won’t get stuck doing it either. Make 45000+ g and then
return to Melmond. Buy the Steel Armor and give it to
your fighter. This will add 34 absorb to your fighter’s attributes. Next, buy
the magic Life. Now you won’t have to go all the way back to Coneria to bring your guys back from the dead and you have
an indestructible fighter. By the time
you have gotten both the Life spell and the Steel Armor you are ready to defeat
the vampire. Go down to the B3 level and defeat the vampire (I have marked his
room). He does not have a great deal of vitality but his hits are very deadly
even to the fighter with the steel armor (he hit me 109 damage points!). Grab
the RUBY and get out of there alive! A hint of advice: RUN AWAY FROM
COCKTRICES! They will get you “stoned” if you know what I mean. The last thing
you need is to be stuck 3 levels below ground in the Earth Cave with no spells
and a “stoned” fighter. Go back to Melmond. Everyone
in town has something to say, even the conceded Dr. Unne.
Basically, you stopped the Vampire attacks and all, but the Earth is still rotting.
Now you have to go to the Tunnel. Go west to the tunnel. Go and talk to the Titan. You have the RUBY and he
eats some. He vanishes and you can continue onward. Enjoy the treasures at the
south end of the tunnel. The Great Axe (useless), 620g (a
single monster nowadays), 450g (half a monster) and the Silver Helmet (the only
worth wile thing). The exit is just at the northwest end of the tunnel.
Go south to Sarda’s Cave. Talk to Sarda and he gives
you the ROD! Now it’s time to kick ass. Go back to Melmond
and sell your junk. Now go to the Earth Cave. Earth Cave (Again…) Travel back to the cave. Go down to level B3 and go
behind the vampire’s room. There is a stone slate. Examine it…it’s evil or something. Anyways, just go to your items and
select the ROD item. Using my maps navigate your way down to the cause of these
evil happenings. Go down to the center
of the earth and then there is a room. Examine the ORB. Oh no…LICH! Use your
Harm magic spells on this guy. He is dead right? HRM2 takes a whopping 150+
damage points off Lich and expect HRM3 to take 180+ damage off of him. Once Lich is defeated walk straight. The ORB has been
revived! Yeah! Now walk forward again to find yourself outside the cave. Now
you have to travel to Crescent Lake. Once inside Crescent Lake go to the eastside of town
along a path just outside the magic shops. There is a ring of Sages. Talk to
them all and you will receive the CANOE. You may now journey to places you
could not journey to before. You can now travel along streams. The Sages tell
you to go to the Gurgu Volcano and destroy the fire
demon, but don’t go just yet. I have a better idea. How about we jumpstart our
adventure and grab the Airship and get promoted? First thing to do is to go to
a cave just south of Provoka. I think you should get
a little more levels before it though. Ice Cave If you have a map, good, if not, travel southeast from
Pravoka to the river. Once on the river follow these
directions: go west, north all the way, west all the way, south, west and
follow the river from there. Anyways, you have to find the FLOATER. I’ve laid
out exactly how to get it. Get it and leave. It will be very difficult and you
will die many times. If you do it on the first shot you are A). A professional
at this game and shouldn’t be reading this B). You’re one lucky kid. You have
to watch out for a lot of things. First off, if you see any Wizards run. They
can use a normal attack that will act like RUB and simply slain you with no
questions asked. If you see fighters run (if you can), they
have RUB and all sorts of fun magic spells. If you come across the EYE,
which you will in order to get the Floater, don’t waste your time, as these
guys will use spells that STONE and ERASE you. Anyone with an “Fr” in front of
their name will indeed use harmful ICE spells. Remember these things and you
will be fine. Once you have the FLOATER go to the desert just south of Crescent
Lake and use the FLOATER. The airship will appear. Now, it’s time to get promoted.
Your airship can fly anywhere in the world, and you’ll never ever get attacked
by any monsters. The only bad thing is the limitations of landing. You can only
land on grass plains. It’s time to go to the Castle of Ordeal. Castle of Ordeal (North Castle is the
name I gave it) Your soul duty is to recover the TAIL. For this
mission I have stock loaded myself with 99 heal potions at a cost of 5950g.
There is two ways to get to this castle. First you could fly to a spot where
landing would be good. I think there is only one possible place to land, on the
very tip of the strip of land to the North of the castle. If you land there you
must travel to the other side of the gulf (which can’t be canoed across). So
you have to travel through a grueling amount of marshland and forest with
dangerous monsters. OR you could find your ship and sail there. You must be
thinking, “Well why would you sail there if there is no ports to dock at?” The
truth is that you can actually dock at the river. If you manage to sail to a
river you can continue by canoe, so it’s like you did dock. The choice is up to
you. I sailed, this will be beneficial considering how weak you may become
after retrieving the TAIL. I’ll walk you through the entire castle. Here goes:
Enter the castle. Talk to the man just north of the entrance. In the northwest
corner of the room is a door, go inside. Go on the chair. Exit the room you end
up in and touch the pillar. You end up in another room. Again, touch the
pillar. Now you should be in a room with two pillars to the west of you. The
top pillar (or north pillar) will take you backwards. Take the south pillar.
You should be in a room shaped like a 6 with a pillar. Touch the pillar. Now
you are in a square-shaped room with two pillars to the east of you. The most
north pillar will take you back to the 6-shaped room. Go in the south pillar.
You are now in the north end of a hallway. Head south. Go in the pillar. You
are now in a square-shaped room with two pillars. The most north one will take
you back to where you were. Go in the south pillar. You are now in a hallway.
Head east. Go inside the room fight the MUDGOLS and take the Zeus Gauntlet.
Which; if you have the same team as mine, no one can use it. It can be used by
anyone though just not equipped. Refer to the special item list on the site.
Now go south from the room down the hallway and there should be a pillar, or a
few pillars. The correct pillar is on the northwest/southwest diagonal to a set
of stairs. If you enter that one you will be inside the room with the stairs.
Go in the stairs. You are in another hallway. Go north. Fight the NITEMARE just
inside the room at the top of the hallway. Retrieve the HEAL STAFF. Refer to
the special item list on the site. Use the heal staff every turn after you
get it. Go west in the room to a room with three treasures: Iron Gauntlet, Ice
Sword and the Gold Ring. Awesome items. Head south
down the hallway to a bunch (4) of treasure chests. In the chests: 7340g, 1455g,
House. Go west down the hallway. Open the chest and there is the TAIL. Exit
through the chair…oh no! What the @#$%? A zombie dragon is there. Use the
good old harm spells and you should be laughing. Go to the chair. Go out the
way you came. Now sail back to your Airship. Fly to the Dragon caves. Dragon Caves Go and talk to the king of the Dragon’s, Bahumut. He will promote you for receiving the TAIL. Now go
and get the magic spells you couldn’t before (WARP/EXIT) and enjoy your new
look. For promotions click HERE Gurgu Volcano It’s time to revive the second orb. Enter the volcano
in style now, forget the canoe…it’s airship time. Fly
to the volcano fight zero bad guys on the way. With full health enter the
volcano. Lava (the red stuff you step on that makes noise) takes 1 hp/movement
off your characters health. Remember AFIR, the shittiest magic? Well now you
need it. It will protect you from all that “scorching” you might get. Watch out
for Red Giants cause they hit very hard. Use the map I provided and make your
way down to the final floor “G5” and examine the orb. Before examining the orb
I’d make sure that you take advantage of your Heal Potions and fully recover
your HP points. Go and fight Kary. The first thing
I’d do is cast AFIR (Anti-Fire) FAST on the toughest guy. Next I’d cast FAST on
the second toughest guy and I’d use the HEAL CANE. If your guys are tough
enough this should be a joke. It should take no more than 2 rounds if so. Walk
forward and you automatically exit. Yeah! Only two orbs need revived now. Go to
Coneria and sell what you don’t want/need. What the Knight has magic? When your fighter gets promoted to Knight he also acquires
the skill of white magic. He can’t use
HEAL, HARM or HRM2. Likewise your thief can learn magic too. The thief can
learn black magic. Onrac It’s time to go to Onrac.
This city is rather hard to reach. Its location is within a deep forest that
you can’t land near there. Anyways follow the river beside the town south till
it comes to a forest, you should be able to land there. So enter Onrac and go shopping for items and what not and
information. You’ll soon learn that a guy named KOPE thought he saw a robot
near the caves. Hmm? Shall we investigate? Waterfalls Canoe the river until you reach the waterfall. As soon
as you touch the waterfall you will enter a cave. Follow the map until you reach the main room.
Inside are 6 treasures. Obtain the treasures: Wizard Cane, Ribbon, 13450g,
6400g, 5000g and Defense Sword. Talk to the robot and obtain the CUBE! Gaia Go to Gaia. Walk around the town and buy some magic.
You will learn that a fairy has been kidnapped from the spring in the town. I
wonder who did that? A pirate, you’ll soon find was
the culprit in this case. The pirate kidnapped the fairy and sold it to the
caravan. There is a spot in the desert I called “Caravan”, I’ve marked this on
the map with a * symbol. You can’t actually see the caravan, since there is no
tower or town symbol. Anyways when you step on the caravan square you will be
transported to the inside of a shop. The fairy costs 50000g so make sure you
have it before wasting your time. Open the BOTTLE by using it. The fairy is released.
Go to Gaia. Go to the spring in the town. You will see a fairy is there now.
Talk to the fairy. The fairy goes to the bottom of the spring and retrieves
OXYALE for you. Go to Onrac. Onrac Once inside Onrac talk to
the lady infront of the Submarine. She will let you
pass now that she knows you have the Oxyale. Enter
the Sea Shrine. Watch out for Ghosts/Water as they sometimes hit very hard
(100+). The G-Levels are for the SLAB and basic items. The fiend is located in
the B2 level. As always when you get to the fiend’s room examine the orb. I
suggest using LIT3 on Kraken. This will drive 300+ hit points away. After you defeated the Kraken move forward. Now go to Melmond. Melmond Talk to Dr. Unne. Dr. Unne
uses the slab and gives you the ability to talk to the Lefeinish.
You’ll meet this people soon. Let’s go there. Lefein In the whole area surrounding Lefein
there is only one place where you can land and that’s right up by the
mountains. There is a guy northeast of the entrance. He has the CHIME. You need
this to get into the MIRAGE TOWER. You’ll need to walk around to get to this
guy, as there is some water in the way. Before you leave buy
LIF2 and NUKE in the hidden magic shops. Go east and the northeast exit
and you’ll hit them. Nuke is one of the best magic in the entire game. It’s
time for some real action. Mirage Tower You have to land right at the southern belly of the
desert. Enter the tower. Climb to the third level (G3) and enter the Sky Castle
through the center square. On the 2nd level of the Sky Castle is the
ADMANT (G5). Take the ADMANT and exit the castle. Go to the dwarves’
caves. Dwarves’ Cave Talk to Smith, the blacksmith. He will use the ADMANT
to make the XCALIBUR sword. Return to the Sky Castle via the Mirage Tower and
defeat the fiend. Sky Castle Just watch out for the Catman
creatures. They will almost always use FIR2 (Fire 2) on you. Tiamat is not that difficult to defeat. First
off, use FAST (Black Wizard) and ALIT (White Wizard). Your
two other warriors attack. If you don’t do this, Tiamat’s
thunder attack will take up to 300+ hp off each of your members. On your second
move, assess any injuries with your White Wizard’s cure magic and use FAST on
your other fighting warrior. Once you have defeated the fiend, move forward and
exit. Garland’s Castle (Temple of the Fiends) This is it. If you defeat this castle you win! Here’s
the walkthrough: 1.Go up the southeast stairs. 2.Go up the eastern stairs. 3.Watchout for the Gas Dragons! They use the magic “POISON” which causes 100+ DMG
to each member. Enter center room. Defeat the Phantom. Use the lute to open the
slab. Go down the stairs. 4.Go down the stairs. 5.Go down the northeast stairs FIR3 will take care of the FR cast wolves. 6.Go west. Use FIR3 on the FR cast dragons. Go down the stairs. 7.Go north, then east, then south. If you run into the Medusas use BANE. At
the stairs you’ll fight Lich. Use HRM4 for an ass whooping 300+ dmg. 8.Go down the stairs. 9.Go north through the room, east through the room and then south. Not that
it matters, but you can get the ProRing, Katana, ProCape and 26000g in the bottom rooms. Go to the stairs
and fight Kary. Use AFIR right away. Go down the
stairs. 10.Toast the lobsters and
trolls w/ a bit of LIT2 (or better) magic. Toast the Waters w/ ICE2 or better.
Go down the southeast stairs and fight the Kraken. Use ALIT right away. 11.Go east and fight the Tiamat. Use ALIT right away. Go down the northeast stairs. 12.Enter the center and last
room. Talk to Garland three times. Fight CHAOS! I would first use NUKE &
ARUB, then FAST & FOG2 then CURE (if needed) or ANTI spells and LV3 ice,
fire or lightning if you are out of NUKE. Do that till you win or die. The reason I stopped hosting maps is because I didn't want to get into copyright problems with sites that they originated from and they took up tons of space. Some maps are found in the original packaging of the game itself, however if your playing the game via emulator or if you just have the cart itself, then you'll only have the world map (select + B). So you can get the other maps HERE: at RPG Classics.
