Dear Parents,
As Physical Education (PHE) teachers of your child, it is our job to ensure that your child leads a healthy and active lifestyle.  In this letter, we would like to inform you of several important factors regarding your child's participation in PHE classes.
As you know, PHE is a mandatory subject, therefore, your child is expected to participate to the best of his/her ability.  This takes into account all the little aches and pains, minor injuries, fatigue, etc.  Normally, if your child attends school they are expected to participate in PHE classes.  If something serious prevails, then a note of explanation is expected from you.
Proper running shoes are very important to the progress and performance of your child.  Street shoes, sandals, platform shoes, and boots are not allowed in PHE class.  In addition, students are expected to change into proper PHE attire for each class (red t-shirt, navy shorts, navy sweat pants, sweatshirts when going outside).  This is done to promote personal hygiene and safety.
Another safety concern is jewelry.  Students are not allowed to wear jewelry during PHE classes.  Jewelry and valuables should be left in the student's locker or at home.  Nothing of value should ever be left in the change room.  The responsibility for these items is of the students.
Physical fitness, athletic skills, participation, effort, sportsmanship, teamwork, and safety are all stressed throughout the PHE program.  This is what your child is evaluated on.  Your child is also invited and encouraged to participate in any noon hour activities and school teams as an extension of our PHE program.  As a further extension, we ask that you encourage a healthy lifestyle at home.  This includes healthy eating and exercise.
An important reminder that during any physical activity there is some risk of injury.  This risk is usually very minimal when everyone follows the rules.  Students who have difficulty working on playing safely, or listening to, or following instructions create a safety hazard to others.
Adjustments and considerations are always made for injuries and medical problems throughout the program.
Sincerely,
Ruth Thompson PHE teachers
