| Wild River Hatch #1 |
| Freith paced nervously. It had been long enough for her children to wait, and they were making this clear. The eggs rocked and bucked as Freith called for the bonders to be assembled. There weren’t enough bonders from all the eggs, but this only worried Freith. Every Alskyran Dragoneer knew that there were almost certainly a few duds and a dragon or two that would go unbonded. Sannata was the first to grace the dunes. She had been waiting the longest, and it was no surprise she was ready for the eggs to hatch. Lakhshmi and Sarasvati were next, knocking into each other trying to be the first to reach one of the larger eggs. Rayv, their cousin, shot up from where he had been sleeping in the stands as Carlotta rushed onto the dunes, running into Sannata who had stopped short of the eggs. Two eggs bucked into each other as the bonders still tried to collect themselves. A red and a purple dragon fell onto the dunes as their eggs cracked. The purple turned to her mother, rejecting all the bonders, as the red rushed towards Sarasvati and tackled her. “I thought you’d put up more of a fight!” The red hissed, butting at Sarazvati. “I’ll show you how much of a fight I can give you, Derewith!” Sarazvati laughed as she picked the red male hatchling off her chest and sat him down next to her. Two more eggs cracked, showering their mother and the unbonded purple with their shell fragments. A white and a black rushed towards the candidates. The white sits next to Carlotta and looks up at her. “What are you doing?” Carlotta sighed, looking down at the little hatchling. “Fixing your face in my memory,” the white crooned. “Why?” Carlotta sighed. “So I’ll always remember the look on your face when we bond,” The white crooned. Carlotta smiled and kneeled to stroke the white’s muzzle, “Well, Kiuoath, is this expression good enough for you?” The black walked back and forth in front of the remaining bonders, examining each one. He snorted angrily and turned towards his mother. That was when he spotted Veryan, one of the young Caer children, watching from the stands. “Hey, you! Get down here!” The black crooned. Veryan looked at the hatchling oddly until the black leaped into the air and fluttered up to where he was. “Jiuyath! What do you think you’re doing!” Veryan exclaimed. “You won’t come to me, then I’ll come to you,” Jiuyath said, butting into Veryan. “Now, get down those stairs, mister! I’m hungry!” Sannata sighed as the rest of the eggs laid dormant, but Lakhshmi wasn’t going to accept that the rest of the eggs were duds. She rushed forward and cracked several of the egg shells. Of the five eggs she cracked, four dragons spilled out onto the sands. There were one green, one dragon who seemed to be off colored, a silver, and a VERY small black. The green weakly moved to the side of the purple. The purple laid next to the green and nudged her lovingly. “Are you all right?” The purple sighed. “Yeah, Niyuasth,” the green crooned. “I’m glad, Viuyath,” The purple sighed, laying her head gently on the green’s back. The silver stood and flexed her wings. She walked proudly over to Lakhshmi. “Thank you, Lakhshmi,” the silver crooned. “I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get to you.” “I’m glad you were able to, Okiath,” Lakhshmi sighed, stroking the silver’s muzzle. Now, Sannata stood on the sands alone. The black was laboring to breath, but as she went to help it, the oddly colored dragon caught her. “Sannata, his bond will help him,” The dragon crooned. “I am yours.” “Oh, Jikavith, you’re so beautiful,” Sannata sighed. “No, I’m not,” Jikavith sighed. “I’m ugly. I’m not normal.” “I think you’re beautiful, love. I don’t care what color you are,” Sannata sighed as she walked off the dunes. The Dragoneers murmured as they watched the little black try and pull himself to his feet. He was just too weak. No one wanted to see a hatchling die on hatching day. It almost always happened with dud eggs, but never had a hatchling died after breaking shell. “Zasith!” The shout came from the stands. Rayv leaped onto the dunes in front of the small black. “Zasith, I’m not going to let you die. I’m not going to let you!” Rayv exclaimed, clutching the black’s head to his chest. “I’m not going to let myself die now that you’re here, Rayv,” Zasith sighed, crooning happily. Casero walked over and helped Rayv to his feet. Casero sighed as he lead the young Dragoneer and his new bond up to the Medics’ Den to see if the black did have any chance of surviving.
