Print out the following sheets for each student. Every new round is a separate sheet. All the pictures are on the left so that each student can eventually make a sample of each step and staple it to the right.

Dificulties students might encounter:

1- Makes 2 chains on the sides instead of 1

2- Makes 1 chain in a corner instead of 2

3- Forgets to make 6 dc in each corner

Tell them that each side can only have 1 ch, each corner has 2. I often tell mine that corners always have 3-2-3 (which means 3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc). This helps them remember what to put in here.

4- Forgets to make a single crochet into the first dc.

Just show them how dificult it is to end with a slip stitch there, and that it’s more convenient to have it “land” in the middle of the space instead of beside it.

5- Forgets HOW to make a granny square.

Well, then, have HIM/HER be the teacher and teach you how to make a granny square, using the instructions. It might help to use symbols, and have them draw them on a sheet of paper. At some point, they *will* remember and “get it”.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS :
Each Chain 2 at the beginning of a round = your first double crochet.

Groups of  3 double crochet  together are refered to as "shells".
Start with a Chain 4 (or 5), slip stitch into the first chain in order to form a ring.

ROUND 1 Chain 2, make 2 double crochets in the ring, work (chain 2, 3 double crochets) 3 times; end round by doing a chain-1, then ONE single crochet into the second chain of your beginning chain 2. You now have 12 double crochets, and 4 (chain-2) spaces.

Insert your hook here, behind the arrow so a large loop won’t form:

and make a single crochet into the Chain 2 (1st double crochet)

ROUND 2 Chain 2, 2 double crochet in the first corner space, *(3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet) in the next chain-2 space,*. Repeat from * to * 2 MORE times. To end the round, do 3 double crochet in first space (the same space as the first double crochets) chain 1, and do a single crochet in the first double crochet (forms your last chain-2 space). You now have 24 double crochets, with 4 Chain-2 spaces.

ROUND 3
Chain 3, 2 double crochet in the first corner space, 3 double crochet in next space between shells, *(3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet) in the next chain-2 space, 3 double crochet in the next chain-1 space.* Repeat from * to * 2 times MORE, finish your round by doing 3 double crochets in the same space as your first double crochets, chain 1, then do 1 single crochet in the first double crochet (in other words, your starting chain 2) in order to form your last chain-2 space. You now have 12 spaces.

If you'll notice, you have a pattern forming: you'll put in 3 double crochets between shells, and in each corner, make sure you always have 3 double crochets, 2 chains, and three more double crochets. Always end your round with a chain 1 AND a single crochet into your first double crochet. That will make your hook "land" in the middle of the chain space instead of being on top of your 1st double crochet. Continue working in t his pattern until you reach your desired square size.

NOTE: When you're ready to finish your granny square, you'll just work your established pattern, and at the end, this is what you'll do:
3 double crochet in the same space as the first double crochet, chain 2 , then do a slip stitch into your first double crochet (no single crochets this time).

I like ending my granny squares with a round of double crochets in each double crochet, adding 2 (or 3 if you like) double crochets, chain 2, 2 double crochets into each corner. I then end with a slip stitch into my first double crochet. :o)
