Materials:
Worsted weight yarn, either acrylic or cotton.
Size G or H hook
Tapestry needle
Key Chain, small
2 inch piece of cardboard
squiggly eyes and glue, craft bond or hot
Shank button

Gauge:  Does not matter.

Purse:

Chain the length you wish the purse to be, then add 2 extra chains.

Round 1- 2 double crochet in the 3rd chain from hook.  Double crochet in each chain stitch to next to the last chain, 2 double crochet in last chain, working on opposite loops of the chain stitches, double crochet in each chain stitch, slip stitch in first true double crochet, not your chain 2.

Round 2- Chain 1, single crochet in same stitch and in each double crochet around, end with a slip stitch on top of the first single crochet.

Round 3 to Round ? - Chain 2 [counts as your first double crochet, now and throughout], double crochet in each double crochet around, slip stitch in top of the chain 2.

Here you can alternate with double crochet and single crochet rows, or continue with double crochets only.

When the purse is ONE ROW before the height you wish it to be, count the number of stitches on a side, (not the round), divide it by 2.  I had 24, so I double crocheted up to stitch number 12, chain 4, then make a double crochet in the same stitch (button loop made), double crochet to the end of the round, end with a slip stitch.  DO NOT FINISH OFF YET.

Make a chain the length you want the strap to be.  Attach it to the other side with a slip stitch.  The strap is in your right hand (or left, if you're a lefty).  Turn your work so that the strap is in the opposite hand now, since you're going to be working with the chains.  Insert hook into the next chain, then through the double crochet that is BESIDE the one where you made the slip stitch, pull up a loop, and complete a single crochet.

Here you have a few options:

Option #1:  Continue making single crochets into the chain, but not in the top loop of your chain.  You're going to make it under both loops of the chain.

OR...

Option #2:  Make each single crochet into the back hump of the chain stitch (makes for a sturdier strap).

Option #3:  If your purse is large and you're going to make a liner for it, instead of making single crochets, make double crochets, again using either option #1 or option #2.

When you finish the strap, join with a slip stitch in the next double crochet from where you began.

NOTE: At this point you can add some fringe to the bottom of the purse.

Yarn Smiley

Sew button on opposite side of the button loop.

Wrap your yarn around the cardboard 100 times and cut yarn.  Cut off an 8 inch piece of yarn, fold in half, and lie it on the table.  Slip your yarn off of the cardboard carefully and onto the double strand of yarn, wrap around the yarn and pull tight, tie with a double knot.  Cut yarn and trim evenly.  Glue the squiggly eyes and with a black piece of yarn or piece of chenille wire, make a smile and glue it.  Tie the yarn on the key ring. Attach to purse strap with the key ring. You might want to put a tiny bit of glue on the knot so it won't come off the ring.
