| The scientists of Riverwood have decided that the cause of the fish kill was the result of the dam. It was designed improperly due to the lack of knowledge in the 1930's. As the dam stands, when large amounts of water are released from the reservoir, it causes the water to become supersaturated cuasing a fish kill. Something must be done now inorder to prevent this from happening again in the future. One way to improve this is to simply extend the reservoir's holding capacity so that no water is needed to be released during wet springs. This will be cheap and practice. By holding more water, you are saving for the dry season. If you really want to make sure this never happens again, deflectors can be installed not allowing water to reach deep depths and to fiz. This is expensive, but practical. Anther problem has also arisen. Large amounts of selenium have been found in the water. The EPA allow 0.01 -ppm and currently it is at 0.008 -ppm. This is approaching dangerous levels. In order to prevent this, concrete should be placed at the bottom of the dam so that the release water will not turn up more volcanic soil contain the substance. Each solution have their own advantages and disadvantages. Only at the town meeting will we be able to come to a decision. |
