Day 90; Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003. Xmas day! Get up early, look under the tree for my presents! Oops, just a dream! No tree, no presents. I have a lazy morning, finally getting down to McDonalds for breakfast about 10:30. At about 1:00 I meet my friend T at the Central MTR, and we walk over to the ferry terminals. After some looking around we decide to take the 2:00 PM ferry to Yung Shue Wan in Lamma Island. I had been to Sok Kwu Wan in Lamma a couple months earlier, but that was the smaller of the two towns. So today we would see the other part of Lamma. The ferry was on holiday schedule, with regular ferries and fast ferries alternating every 30 minutes. The 2:00 ferry was a fast ferry, but actually was not really so fast. I wonder how slow the regular ferry is? As usual, the seating was like a very wide airplane. We sat upstairs on the left side sharing a set of 3 seats with another passenger. The ride took about 35 minutes, and cost $20HK. The boat was quite crowded, and nearly every seat was taken (perhaps about 200 total). Many people were out enjoying the Xmas holiday. The ferry terminal at Yung Shue Wan was at the north end of the harbor area. We walked down the pier and headed south along the waterfront. There were lots of people, lots of restaurants, lots of boats. The walkway later breaks away from the waterfront and goes inland. According to the sign it goes all the way to Sok Kwu Wan, which is a little south and on the other (east) side of the island. I asked T if she felt up to a little walking, and she said OK, let's do it! So we walked thru Yung Shue Wan, thru the "outskirts" of town, and soon we were in the lush hills. The path was a paved walkway. There were very few stairs (until we got to the other end). Inclines were simply steep ramps with ridges to assist in footing. Some people were actually riding bicycles, but this looked pretty tricky, and also a bit dangerous with all of the people on the path. The walk took us up out of town and south along the west coast of Lamma for a little more than an hour, and then it crossed over to the east side and then went down to Sok Kwu Wan. There were occasional pavilions to sit and rest. Some parts were a bit strenuous, but it was well worth the effort. The views were really nice, and the fresh air and sunshine were invigorating. It was a really great walk! We arrived in Sok Kwu Wan about 4:30PM. SKW is much smaller than Yung Shue Wan, but it is home to a very well known restaurant, Rainbow, where we had our Xmas dinner of steamed fish, chinese greens, and rice. After we selected our meal the waiter brought us our live fish for approval. Did the fish really give me an angry look? Our table was at the edge of the patio seating area over the water, and we ate our meal as the sun was setting on the harbor. A really nice meal and a really nice place. Rainbow has its own ferry service back to Central, so we caught the 6:00 PM ferry and were back in Central about 6:30PM. T was tired so we said goodbye and I went on home. Later in the evening my flatmate and her father came back from their trip to Canada. They were really glad to get back, and although I had enjoyed the privacy and quiet for the last 10 days, it was good to see them too. |
