His first love was the stage. He started his stage career during his high school years while he was attending Hotchkiss in Lakeville, Connecticut, while there he played the lead role in the school play, Mr. Roberts, and because he turned in a great performance it won him a place in the Sharon, Connecticut summer stock company. Then he continued his stage career at Harvard University with the Dramatic Club as an actor and a director while earning his B.A. Then he made his New York stage debut with the New York Shakespeare Festival where he was a member for eight years, while there he played such roles as Romeo, Troilus and Orlando. Other Shakespeare plays included A Midsummer Night's Dream, Richard II, Love's Labor Lost, The Merchant Of Venice, Macbeth and Hamlet. In the 1960s he co-starred with legendary actors, Art Carney in the Broadway play, "Take Her, She's Mine" and Henry Fonda in the Broadway play, "Generation". During his stage career he had appeared in over 100 plays where he did Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, Vaclav Havel and many other playwrights. During the 1970s he was the managing artist for the LA Actors Theater in Los Angeles where he also wrote and produced his own plays. He won an Obie for his acting in the Vaclav Havel play "A Private View" and he won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for distinguished directing of another Vaclav Havel play "Largo Desolato". He also directed fellow actor, Raul Julia, in Shakespeare's Macbeth at the Public Theatre in New York during the latter part of both of their careers.
He also made his mark on the screen, he won the Golden Globe for Best TV Drama Actor for his outstanding performance of Joseph Armagh in the Classic Mini-Series, Captains And The Kings. He made his film debut in 1970 in the Western, Lawman. He also gave memorables performances as General Lewis A. Armistead in Gettysburg, Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, Dirk Pitt in Raise The Titanic, Hugh Dorsey in The Murder Of Mary Phagan, George Mische in The Trial of the Catonsville Nine, Lucius Percival Greene "Pinky" in A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square, Michael Reynolds in Washington Mistress, Frederick, in the Woody Allen drama, Interiors, Father Rutilio Grande in Romero, Francis in Logan's Run, Hawk in Rooster Cogburn, Albert Speer in The Bunker, Howard Prescott in The Secret of My Success and Jeffrey Pelt in The Hunt For Red October. He was also a semi-regular in the hit TV-Series, The Equalizer. He would have had a role in the blockbuster hit, The Fugitive, opposite Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones but he became too ill and had to be replace and it wasn't too long after this that we lost this most talented and gifted person to brain cancer. He was born on July 19, 1938 in New York City, New York. He was married to actresses Kathleen Widdoes where they had one daughter and Blair Brown with whom he had one son, and he was the Grandson of Judge Learned Hand who was a U.S. Second Curcuit Judge for New York. He also was an avid gardener and Master Carpenter where he would build his own furniture.
