On now to the Deserted Village at the foot of Slievemore Mountain, the highest in Achill at 2204 ft.You will wonder at the ruins of a large village built beside an Early Christian burial ground. Where did everybody go, and what's more important, why? A Megalithic Tomb is among other prehistoric sites nearby, and we'll show you where to start climbing.

Heinrich Boll, the Nobel Prize winning author, lived here while writing "My Irish Journal". His Cottage is still being used by artists and writers, and can be seen on the way to the Mission Settlement in Dugort. The giant pot used for making the famine soup and gruel is still near the Settlement, and we'll show you where to look.

There are two more Blue Flag Beaches in Dugort, Dugort Strand and the Golden Strand. Lynchehaun, the man who was the inspiration for John Millington Synge's "Playboy of the Western World," worked at the local estate house nearby. Hear the story of his troubles with the Landlady, romantic and otherwise, which led to his case being the first exdradition between the UK and the US.

Have you heard of Granuaile, a.k.a. Grace O'Malley, a.k.a. The Pirate Queen? This was some lady! See her Tower House at Kildavnet. You'll also see her lookout tower overlooking Blacksod Bay. Grace was in command of all shipping along the Mayo and Galway Coastline in the 16th Century, and sailors feared her!
