"Celebrating 75 Years"

In 1919 a small group of women formed a social club. Following these meetings, a decision was made to form a Lutheran Sunday School for the spiritual education of their children. This social club of women included Hilda Bobbit, Ellen Carlson, Emma Sandeen and Viola Wolf. Later Anna Manzke, Mrs. Lyman, Mrs. Richter and Mrs. McWilliams were added to the group.

In 1923 Reverend Albert Buddenhagen, of Tinley Park, was called to conduct two services monthly at Arbor Park School. Redeemer Lutheran Church received its charter on April 10, 1930, and services were held in the unfinished basement of what is now the church. The original frame church was built on the basement and dedicated in December 1930. Reverend Ernest Karsten was the first minister called for the new congregation.

In the early years of the congregation, the women's guild held many dinners in the basement to raise funds for windows and church paraments.

In 1935 Reverend Alvin Klein became pastor and served until 1941 when he became an army Chaplain. Reverend Nash served as a supply pastor until 1944, and was succeeded by pastor Louis Fabregius for a few months.

In November of 1944 Reverend Victor Schroeder was called and served until the fall of 1949. During the time that Rev. Schroeder was here, the congregation voted to begin construction for a larger church facility which was dedicated November 30, 1947. This new brick building entirely surrounded the older white wood sided church. Individual members and organizations at this time purchased the original stained glass windows for the sanctuary.

In April 1950, Reverend Carlton Mall became minister, and during his stay a Wick's Pipe Organ was purchased. Also in 1950, after 20 years as a mission congregation, Redeemer's became a self-supporting congregation.

Reverend Marvin Keen came to Redeemer's in June of 1954. During his stay, the congregation celebrated its 25th Anniversary and a new parsonage was built next door to the church.

In November of 1957, the Reverend Walter Leibforth accepted the call to be the new minister. Redeemer's kindergarten program was started in the fall of 1959 and Mrs. Leibforth was the first teacher. In the fall of 1960, the east wing annex of the church was dedicated.

In 1965 the Reverend Roger Schnieder accepted a call to Redeemer's, and during his stay, several new internal improvements were made to the building and equipment.

Reverend Allen Wahl came to Redeemer's in May of 1969. During his time with our congregation, early communion classes were started for the 6th graders. Also, in the fall of that year, they had a mortgage burning for the east wing annex addition. In 1972 the church purchased a school bus for both the Sunday school and the youth activities. Also at this time the parking lot was paved, a new glass door was purchased for the entry and new carpet was installed in the Sanctuary in addition to upgrading the organ.

In November of 1974, Reverend Deane Peterson accepted a call to Redeemer's and the parsonage basement was re-modeled. Also, at this time individual classrooms were built in the basement of the church for the Sunday school. In 1982 Reverend James Roseland accepted a call to Redeemer's and the church membership had grown to 500 members. During 1984 lay readers and communion assistants were begun, the church library was formed and Florence Johnson became the church Librarian.

In September of 1984 the Reverend Mark Tweitmeyer accepted the call to Redeemer's and during his stay, the church building was again remodeled. The elevator was added to make the church handicap accessible and the Sanctuary was enlarged. Also at this time, several new stained glass windows were added in the Sanctuary.

In 1993 Reverend Steven Hoerger and Reverend Janet Wittenmyer accepted a call to Redeemer' s. Under their leadership the church has initiated new musical settings and assisted the organist, Roland Johnson, to implement a more enriched choral program. The "New Song Band" was started and accompanies the worshipers at the second service. The church has made space available in the parsonage to provide the community with a Christian based counseling service. In 1998, Redeemer's started a Pre-school program which offers morning and afternoon classes.

On April 10, 2005, Redeemer Lutheran Church celebrated its 75th year.
