Congratulations to two of our Branch committee members
Mark Spencer and Chris Barnfather
on their well deserved election to the County Council
There has been excellent support from local organisations. A new group of canvassers are going out on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s and are reporting good feedback on the doorstep. They had a great result in Hucknall securing 2 County Councillors.
More on the News page.

Chairman's report

Thanks to everyone for coming to our AGM. I will now give my report for 2008.
We have had three fundraising functions; the Beetle Drive, Jazz Evening and Welcome to Christmas all of these involved the Committee members in much hard work. Our President John Whetton and his Lady Wife Christine have been stalwarts in all they have done for us by providing their lovely house for the Jazz evening and Welcome to Christmas, both very successful events.
We have to work hard spending time and shoe leather ensuring Chris Barnfather gets elected to Notts. County Council; I will make sure to give him 100%.
The Association and the agents are working hard on Mark Spencers behalf to ensure he is the next Conservative Member of Parliament for Sherwood.
I have to thank all Members of the Committee for their hard work and commitment buying tickets, bringing raffle prizes and food and helping with bar duties. Thank you also to Robert and Elaine Smith for the loan of their house for events. They are real supporters. I also wish to thank Maureen Baker for taking on minute Secretary and it is worth noting that without Maureen and Frank, unfortunately deceased, we would not have such a large fighting fund at Sherwood.
The Role of a branch can seem quite boring at times but the grass roots are the most important and over the past two years, we have paid 5,000 to the Sherwood Association. Joe Lonergan is the acting Chairman of the Association at the moment until the AGM.
That is basically this years report and I know have to tell you that I am not standing for chairman of this branch, nor to be a member of the committee. I want to thank all the people who have supported me during the years I have been doing this job, particularly my wife Christine. She has put up with a lot. I will now step down and let the President conduct the rest of the meeting.
Thank you

Report from
Rupert Matthews Prospective Conservative MEP Candidate
for the East Midlands
The European Commission has announced a 160bn economic recovery package, but most of that is to come from the countries themselves. This EU package fails to tackle the immediate problem and is the wrong answer for Britain.
The EU Commission seems more eager to be seen to do something, rather than actually helping families and small businesses. The challenge is to get banks lending to each other, to businesses and to individuals. Labour's failure to fix the roof when the sun was shining meant Britain was on the verge of breaching EU rules even before the credit crunch. Labour's Bombshell budget will mean we are in breach for many years to come.
