Sergeant John Hile Gates

Biography

My great-great-grandfather, John H. (for "Hile") Gates (b. June 1, 1825; d. April 3, 1874) was a Sergeant in Co. I of the 39th Kentucky Infantry. Family information has him enlisting on October 1, 1862 at Peach Orchard and mustering out as 2nd Sgt. on Sept. 15, 1865.

John Hile Gates married Nancy Gelene Oney Elswick on March 18, 1865. Their youngest daughter, Louisa Caroline Gates (b. Feb. 18, 1870; d. Feb. 3, 1960), was my great-grandmother; we called her "Granny," and I remember very well her 4-room home in the little community of Pearl in Coryell Co., Texas. In Kentucky, she married her cousin (of some kind) David Collinsworth Oney (her second husband; her first was John Keeton, from another Magoffin Co. family), and they moved to Texas. Their daugther, Mary Josephine Oney, was my maternal grandmother.
