John Dillard HICKMAN, Sgt. in Company E, 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. Was born near Mt. Airy, North Carolina, on May 14th, 1844. He was the son of William Hardin Hickman and Gemima Creed Hickman. John enlisted 31 October, 1862. He was discharged 15 September, 1865. He and a cousin, William H. PARKER, left North Carolina to avoid being conscripted in the rebel service. They enlisted together at South Point, Ohio.

John married Martha Elkins CALLAHAN on December 2, 1865, in Jaspar County, Missouri. She was the daughter of Sterling Callahan and Polly Kidd Callahan. They had 6 children. John died in Cedar County, Missouri, at his brother Gabriel's house on 23 February, 1877.

Two of John's brother also served in the Union Army: Gabriel Hickman with the 12th Kansas Infantry and William Russell Hickman with the 3rd North Carolina Mounted.

Copied from records of the Civil War Veteran 1st Sgt. John D. Hickman, Co. E, 39th Regt. Ky. Inf.; John D. enlisted 31 October 1862, apparently became a regular & rose to the grade of first sergeant. he was discharged 15 September 1876. John was born in North Carolina and said that he and a cousin, William H. Parker, left the state to avoid being conscripted in the rebel service. They enlisted together at South Point, Ohio, on 31 October 1862.

Apparently, John decided to remain in the Army because he rose to the grade of first sergeant and was of that rank when he was discharged, suffering from consumption and pneumonia.

He died at his brother Gabriel's house in Cedar County, Missouri on 23 February 1877.

John married Martha E. Callahan, 2 December 1866, probably in Jasper County, Missouri. The ceremony was performed by Justice of the Peace, Jonathan Effight. Martha claimed that she was a resident of Stockton, Missouri. The couple apparently had at least six children. (The children are named here).

Cousin William Parker reported that he and John were guarding prisoners at Cincinnati, Ohio and were returning by barge when John fell over from heat prostration and was unconscious. He was taken to a hospital in Ashland, Kentucky, and treated. William claimed that John never seemed to recover.
