The Battle of Middle Creek, Floyd County, Kentucky, January 10th, 1862
From Harper's Magazine, February, 1862. The Confederates under Humphrey Marshall are defeated by the Federal troops under Colonel James Garfield. I don't believe that the artist witnessed the battle first-hand as the terrain features don't resemble the area of the battle as it appears today.
