William Norman was William Riley and Emmanuel Norman's father. The following was provided by Marlitta Perkins of Blaine, Johnson County, Kentucky:

William R. Norman, 19 years old, private, Co. H, 39th KY. Enlisted November 25, 1862 at Peach Orchard. Mustered out September 15, 1865, at Louisville, KY. In January, 1865, he was detailed on special duty as a teamster. Present for duty on all rolls. He was 5 ' 11", fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. Born in Buchanan County, VA. Occupation: Farmer. It also stated that he enlisted at Pike Co. on November 25, 1862 (versus the Peach Orchard location). Enlistment officer was William King.

Also found a William Norman, 44 years old, private, Co. H, 39th KY. Enlisted December 18, 1862, at Lawrence Co., KY. Enlistment officer was William King. Mustered out September 15, 1865, at Louisville, KY. Present at all times, except when detailed on detached duty in May/June, 1864. It also stated that he was absent in August 1863 from Pike, KY on detached duty, being on a scout. In September 1863 he was detailed on special duty, attending to Co. horses. He was 5' 8", fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. Born in Gilford Co., N.C.

Not a trace of Emmanuel Norman . . . I did some checking on the net and found some Normans who tied into Pike County and the Hatfields.

The Norman family can be found in the 1850 Tazewell (Buchanan) County, VA, Federal Census. William Riley was seven and Emmanuel was not yet born. They can also be found in the 1860 Pike County, KY, Federal Census. Emmanuel did not fight in the war, but he may have been involved in the Hatfield-McCoy feud on the side of the McCoys. His son, Emmanuel, may also have been involved in "Union activities" during the brutal and bloody mine wars that found some of the hottest fighting in Mingo County along the Tug River. His involvement in that historic era and place of conflict is not well understood.
