Private Sylvester Webb


Biography

Sylvester Webb was born in 1831 in Kentucky. He was the son of William Webb Sr. born 1785 in Virginia and Nancy Ann Wells also born in Virginia in 1790. William was the son of John and Mary Adams Webb. Nancy Ann was the daughter of Richard and Susannah Hutchinson Wells who were married in Floyd County on the 1st of March 1826.

In Floyd County on the 5th of February 1857, Sylvester married Nancy Jane Ward born in 1837. In 1858 they were living on Greasy Creek in Johnson County.

Sylvester enlisted in Company G of the 39th Kentucky Infantry on the 10th of November 1862. He was mustered-out with rest of his company on the 15th of September 1865.

He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Lawrence County, Ironton Ohio. He is buried in a small section containing about 45 to 50 Union Soldiers from the Civil War. His stone was very difficult to read. The 39th numbers stood out the most. We did an etching with a white sheet of paper and photographed. From a distance of about 15 feet the name of Sylvester Webb, Co. G, 39th Ky, Inf. stood out.
