Scuba Diving
Diver Down
My brother shows how exciting
it can be when you see one of the 700 to 1,000 foot freighters
like the one over his right shoulder that will be passing over
you when your under the waves in Michigan's Saint Clair River.
This river is for intermediate to advanced divers only. (Do not
venture out here unless you are with someone who knows the area!!)
Dive Inn Water sports Inc. would be happy to help. You can call
them at 810-987-6263
When diving in the Saint Clair
River's 5 to 8 mile an hour current, you learn the importance
of strapping on not 1 but 2 dive knifes. This area is littered
with very-strong fishing line that can entangle you in a matter
of seconds. The Saint Clair River has many spots that are for
advanced divers only, so drop me a line. I would love to show
you around!!
The Saint Clair River starts
at the southern end of Lake Huron where the Blue Water Bridge
connects Michigan to Canada. The river is only a 1/4 mile wide
here making the water extremely swift. Many ships over the past
century have sunk here due to this swift current. Three of these
ships still rest at the bottom and are in good condition despite
the pounding current and ice flows.
If you ever dive on these
ships, it will quickly become one of your all time favorite dives!!
The limestone shores of Ohio's
Put-In Bay Island make access easy for my friend Bill and I. This
island is known for its wine but I personally like the diving
best. The limestone shore is littered with small caves and large
cracks where fish lie in abundance.
There is virtually no limit
to the fun things you can do underwater.
Under Water Pumpkin Carving
contests in October may be cold but they sure are a lot of fun!
Almost every dive shop in Michigan sponsors one of these contests.
The only rule is that all carvings must be done underwater with
a dive knife. The winner and runner up usually win some good quality
dive gear. Fourth of July dive picnics and underwater scavenger
hunts are another great way to meet other divers and have a lot
of fun. This event is usually timed and started with a gun shot.
The one above was held at Salisbury Quarry in Ohio.

SHIPWRECK DIVING
MICHIGAN
The Regina is one of my favorite wrecks!
She is a 250 foot steel freighter lying upside down in about 80
to 85 feet of water. She sank in the great storm of 1913 with
all hands on board. Eleven ships foundered that night but the
two most talked about were the Regina and the Price. Originally
these ships were thought to have run into each other but after
their discovery in the 1980's it was proven false.
The Regina is in excellent condition
and almost looks like she went down only a few weeks ago. All
knobs and valves turn and are still greased. The only sign to
her time spent at the bottom is a very light silty substance that
covers the whole ship. The Regina offers something special for
all dive classifications. As you can see from the drawing, penetration
is possible through the great gap ripped open on her midship.
This allows trained wreck divers a chance to play.
The local dive shops will run both
day and night tours on this ship. I recommend both! The ship seems
to have a totally different look and feel after dark. Her eerie
past will leave you with a new respect for the power of nature.
(Be careful diving this wreck at
night. This site can get so dark that one time my buddy and I
accidentally penetrated the wreck when we didn't mean to.)
After the great storm of 1913
several ships were sent out into Lake Huron in search of the missing
ships Regina and Price. The sport was one of these ships. Unfortunately
during the search the sport suffered a severe bilge pump problem
and began sinking. The Sport now lies on the bottom of Lake Huron
approximately 3 miles from shore near the city of Lexington.
