Okay, lets settle this issue once and for all....
The only way a drug causes an action in the body is if there is a receptor for
it. Therefore, if a synthetic drug and "natural" drug cause the same
reaction, THEY ARE THE SAME DRUG.
Most drugs even to this day that are commercially produced are
"natural" in origin, in that drug manufacturers use some kind of
agricultural resource to obtain them, at which point they are cut, harvested,
purified, refined, etc, until they appear in pill form in the bottle in your
hand....so sometimes the commercially made drugs are as "natural" as
the organic drugs to which they claim they are preferable.
If so called herbal or natural source drugs actually DO the same thing as the
synthetic drugs they claim to replace, they ARE the same drug by definition
(they have the same structure and fit the same receptor in the body).
Example: I read an advertisement of "natural" vitamin C, made from
rose hips. The vitamin C in rose hips is ascorbic acid.
Synthetic commercially produced vitamin C is...ascorbic acid...the same thing.
What natural and herbal drugs have in common is that 1) they are more expensive
from the comparisons I have made, 2) are ironically much more apt to cause an
allergic reaction because of all the extraneous organic stuff contaminating the
main ingredient, and most importantly, 3) may not even do what they claim to,
because they skirt the FDA regulatory issue by printing a disclaimer on the
label to the effect that they are being sold as a "dietary supplement"
and make no specific medical claim (thus not drawing the FDA to investigate
them.) With an endorsement
*that* weak willed, i am surprised anyone buys them.
Fortunately for the organic industry, there are many otherwise conscientious
people who want to pursue a more healthy lifestyle that have no understanding of
pharmacology.
