THE ABRAHAM LINCOLN BRIGADE: AMERICAN VOLUNTEERS
"There's a valley in Spain called Jarama,
It's a place that we all know too well;
For 'tis there we wasted our manhood,
And most of our old age as well."
About 2,800 Americans ignored the neutrality of the US and came to the aid of Republican Spain. Most of them joined either the Abraham Lincoln Brigade (Battalion) or the George Washington Battalion (which merged with the Lincolns). About 800 of them were killed during the war and many were wounded. Those able to, served in the US military during World War II to fight fascism again. Some were persecuted following the Spanish Civil War in the US for being suspected communists and "Premature Anti-Fascists." Only about 50 American volunteers are still alive today.
