Milton Smith Sr.
  Milton Smith, an Eastern Kentuckian, was drafted into the US Army in June 1945 following graduation from high school.  He was then sent overseas to Pisa, Italy where he was assigned to the 7103rd Disciplinary Training Company, Third Army at a stockade for POW and military criminals.
    Smith briefly served as a guard and was in charge of the prison's maintenance before being transferred to the Special Services, where he became a custodian at an officer's service club, and eventually head of an Enlisted Men's Service Club.
    After 16 months of being a part of the Allied Occupation of Italy and visiting Switzerland for two weeks, Smith returned home to the Appalachians and was honorably discharged on March 8, 1947.
