The information herein is my subjective, two-cents opinion of the model "Mk 707" electric bike ['Vespa' scooter style, but with pedals] sold by Motor Sport , in Vancouver, BC, Canada. My views are based on the use of this electric scooter for ten days, riding in some of the wettest weather Mother Nature can whip up. An amazing Scooter Rain Cape kept me dry. BASICS: This ebike is a 48-volt, 350-watt vehicle. Its size is approximately 4/5 that of a gas-powered Vespa. Its two battery packs weight an estimated 90 lbs., but provide long-range. It has headlights, brake and signal lights, and a horn. Styling is "Italian" (gorgeous, even sexy) and passers-by admired this scooter everywhere I parked. It has a "turbo" button beside the twist-throttle. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Remember Aesop's Fable of the Race Between the Turtle and the Hare? If the Motorino XP is the Hare of ebikes, this Mk. 707 is the Turtle. If you know this Aesop's fable, you know which one won the race, don't you? This Mk. 707 is an able performer for Vancouver commuting. Its pedals are geared for pedal-assist on severe hills only. I suggest that its "turbo" button should be glued in the "on" position permanently, because the "regular" mode is too slow for hilly Vancouver. MOUNTAIN ADVENTURES WITH 350-WATTS: I rode it from Science World to the hills of West Van, through Lions Gate Bridge, at night, in absolutely pouring rain. It was slower than I wanted, but the slower speed probably saved me from an accident or two, given the slick and dark bike route. However, this ebike became more powerful, after its first deep-discharge, and could have gone uphill faster. SHOPPING & PARKING ADVENTURES: Cars were lined up for 15 minutes, just trying to get in/out of a West Van shopping centre. I didn't have to wait. With this ebike, I squeezed between cars, and parked it beside a mall entrance. Nice! I got many envious looks from Christmas shoppers. MY OPINION - BY CATEGORY: [With "turbo" button pressed] A=Excellent B=Good C=Average D=Below Average Waterproofing (wet weather use): A++ Hill-Climbing Ability: B (with one battery pack) Styling: A++ Balance & Handling: B with one battery pack Brake's Stopping Power: B Regenerative Braking as Battery Charger: A Charging Time: A Rider Comfort: B Top Speed: C Range: A Cargo Area: C Theft-Proofing: B REMOVING THE AUXILIARY BATTERY PACK resulted in improved high-climbing. Handling was considerably improved, too. I was also able to put in more groceries under the pillion saddle. THE GOOD: You'll make many new friends from its looks alone. Keyed brake lock makes this ebike relatively theft-proof. Estimated 35km distance, per charge, on flat (e.g. Richmond, BC) roads, with dual batteries. Its sealed drum brakes are fade resistant in rain; will also last much longer than V-brakes, in wet roads. This model's regen braking is up to 500% more efficient than American electric scooters. (I recommend that all consumers consider only ebikes with regen brakes.) A safer cycling ride because its motorcycle-looking rear lights seem to make car drivers more respectful. THE BAD: MTB-type tires make the bike feel slightly unsteady on grooved surfaces. Bike tire grip insufficient for edge-of-the-road cycling. No room on handlebar to mount my Traffic-Calming Light. Pedalling needed to assist uphill rides for West Van's higher elevations. Using gloves makes pressing the turbo button difficult. MY TIPS TO OWNERS OF THIS EBIKE: Add 5lb-10lb additional tire pressure, for flat-prevention. Leave the second battery pack at home, if traveling less than 10 kms. My recommended maximum payload, including cyclist: 200 lbs. (with one battery pack installed.) Tape or glue the Turbo button in the "on" position permanently. Use the foot platform to carry heavy cargo. SUDDENLY, MUCH MORE POWER: After a week, I took the 707 on a long trip, and deep-discharged the battery. The charger took 3 hours to complete recharging the battery. After this first deep-discharge, the 707 seemed to have twice the torque! (I had to revise this review, and base my ratings on its better performance.) WHAT I'D LIKE TO SEE ON ALL EBIKES: A flat-proof, airless, foam inner tire tube. This ebike had a flat tire from a sharp piece of glass. |
