There is this huge mountain overlooking Guatemala City . It is an active volcano looming in the distant sky and it's summit is a popular destination. Norma opted out because of her new knees ( thank God ) leaving Jack, Jo, and myself to do it alone. We rented horses and the first part of our journey was fun -- the horses done all the climbing. What we didn't know is that the last 1.5 hours of climbing is too dangerous for the horses and we left them and set out on foot. It was pitch black when we reached the top with only the city lights below and the red glow of lava ahead. I had purchased a flashlight which turned out to be a lifesaver. The wind was gusting at about 25 cold knots and the footing was unsteady, especially on the way down in the dark. Well, we made it back to the horses and what a welcome sight.

The horses and guide were friendly
What do you mean it's too dangerous for the horses?
The rocks were hot enough to melt the rubber on our shoes
Our guide poked the lava with a walking stick, caught it on fire an lit a cigarette
Lava flow started behind us when we reached the horses
