I think this idea could help with rising sea levels, but in no way be a total solution. I think the sea level would be at least 10 feet higher now,if it wasn't for water diversion (dams and irrigation). The river flows worldwide have been decreased dramatically over the last 100 years. One good example is the Colorado River,it doesn't even make it to the ocean anymore. I think this has offset the melting of the icecaps due to global warming(the sea level would be much higher,if it wasn't for dams and irrigation). 97% of the water on Earth is in the oceans and 2% is in the ice caps. That leaves only 1% for human use.If the ice caps were to melt the sealevels would rise 23 feet.I think the ice caps will melt alot sooner than most scientists think.I think the damage is done and I doubt mankind will do what needs to be done to help offset this process. My idea is to build small hydroelectric dams wherever they could be supported(I think big dams are to destructive to the enviroment). I think this would also help with future energy needs. My theory is that the less water that goes into the ocean, the less the sea level will rise. A possible side effect of this would be damage to aquatic life habitat along the rivers and coastal areas around the mouths of these rivers due to less fresh water. Some other thoughts of mine that deal with sea levels: During the last ice age the sea level was as much as 300 feet lower than it is today. The terrain was much different. Here are some examples I came up with:I estimate that the Colorado River extended at least 1/2 way down the Gulf of California(Baja). This canyon rival the Grand Canyon. I also believe the Gulf of Mexico was a huge brackish lake, that was feed by the Mississippi River(somewhat like Lake Ponchatrain is now,but much bigger).I think there were a couple of narrow channels that connected the Gulf to the Atlantic Ocean. There was a land bridge between Asia and North America.I think the ice age may of ended with a pole shift(a earth wobble),which changed the climate and melted the ice sheets. The sea levels rose in a relatively short time covering some ancient sites like Yonaguni-jima pyramid structure just off a southern Japanese Island.I think the Bimi Road was manmade(this site is near the Bahamas and is underwater). The Sahara Desert was also green around this time. The Earth was a much different place back then. I believe a pole shift(a earth wobble) will occur again in 2012 and the Earth will again be a much different place.I think the human race can survive, but I would take precautions(I would live at least 30feet above sea level). I'm not a scienitist, nor do I have the "credentials" but I do believe in the basic principals of my theories. Robert(Rob)Jackson 12-02-2006. |
